Just spent two hours at Guitar Center and came up with this:

Want to ask about strings, maintenance, amps, mics, or comparisons of different guitars or any music equipment? This is for all threads related to music equipment.

Random movie quote to make you seem hip and "with it": I still hate you, but you have a pretty good collection of nudie magazines.

Your experience with Gibson acoustics is very similar to the one I had the last time I went to Guitar Center. I believe it was a Gibson Songwriter or something like that. Anyway, it was gorgeous! It was used and I think the price was like $800. I picked it up expecting to be blown away by it, and it sounded like shit! It had a real brassy tone to it. The $250 Yamahas sounded better. I played a couple more Gibsons and they all had a similar "brassy" tone. Real disappointing considering how expensive they are.
yeah!!! it was a really beautiful guitar...but it just sounded like crap.

Im pretty sure i like Taylors more becuase Dave has alot of hammer on and stuff and the action is super low on a Taylor so it makes it easy
The guitar is like a woman.....it has and neck and a hole.....

I came to the conclusion that I just do not like the sound or feel of a Taylor guitar. It's just not for me. I am in love with the Martin tone. I think I am forever a Martin girl. I gave Taylors numerous chances and I just don't like them, it's crazy I guess. I know Taylor makes a beautiful guitar, but I just don't go for the sound and feel. Martin guitars do it for me. Just thought I'd share with all you guys. :D
Well, it's settled, we can never be together then.

But that's great, most people wouldn't put that much time or thought into it and just buy something because they heard it was cool. :)
snyder you play guitar?

I played a 714ce with cedar top and to this day it's the only Taylor that impressed me tone-wise. The koa/spruce Martin I played a while back was better and cheaper. The funny thing is when I actually drop some cash I don't want either of them.
There's a lot of lesser known luthiers that I would rather support. The irony is that Martin and Taylor are both mass produced but you end up paying more than you would for an amazing hand made guitar from a smaller shop.

I agree with you except on cost. A Goodall/Collings/Wingert/Mayes/Petros or Hamblin is going to start around 5k. Olsens and Traugott's cost around 25k.

with taylor, martin, and other big brand, however, you're also paying for consistency. one 914 is gonna sound almost exactly like the next 914 off the shelf.

there's more variation with the smaller luthiers -- and since 99% of the guitars coming from small luthiers have to be custom ordered, if you buy a guitar and you dont care for it, you're still stuck with it.
