My first experience with Taylors

Unread post by charliemike » Fri Jul 09, 2004 1:38 pm

I just got back from playing several as I'm very tempted to drop $1800 on a guitar.

So I played in no order:

414ce
710LTD
810LTD

The 414ce was imbuia and spruce I think. I did not like the sound at all. I wasn't very happy with it at all.

The 710 must have been a 710ce LTD as it was a cutaway. It was made in 1993 so I'm having trouble finding out the woods used. Could have been Sitka and Indian Rosewood. Played nicely. Good action, though quite honestly it wasn't the sound I was looking for ...

Then I played the 810 LTD and holy shit that was the guitar. If it had been a cutaway I would have probably sold a leg right there to get it. It was perfect. I played some Nancies and it sounded exactly like I wanted it to ... So my contact at the store (The Guitar Shop in Wash, DC) is going to try to find me a cutaway with that wood construction.

The LoPrinzi is very bassy so I don't need another one of those. The Taylor was dead-on ... the lows were subtle but not overpowering. The mids and highs rang through exactly like I wanted. When I play Nancies on my LoPrinzi the lows really stand out and drown out the mids ... The 810 really shown through ... I highly recommend going for a higher end one even if it takes you longer to save for it ... in the end, it's really worth it if you love Dave's stuff and are trying to get that sound.

$2000 is roughly what he quoted me ...

Their stuff is older ... nothing brand new so the guitars they have are all top-notch stuff ... no crap. They treat me VERY well there and have had customers from John Kerry (the Senator) to Dave Matthews himself.

Just thought I'd share for those looking for a guitar.

Make sure you play all guitars possible before droppin down that type of money. Also...try some Martins too :)

I played both the 7xx series and the 8xx but I don't know...I think I like the 7xx better

the top wood is what makes the difference between the 700 and 800 series, you probably just dont like englemann or cedar, depending on the 700 you played.

800's are definately killer guitars, but then again most of the Taylors are.

if it was a stock 400 series guitar its ovangkol. the LTD's had imbuia for a short period.

depending on the 7, the 7 and 9 wont be too different. 7's have either englemann spruce which is also on the 9's or cedar. 8 has sitka. if im not mistaken, regardless of series, all x55 or x54 have sitka.

depends on the persons view.. some people like the all wood appointments on the 700s better than the shiny abalone on the 900s.. abalones more expensive though lol.

Just so you all know the 700 series is better then the 800 series, I think you should find a limited later this summer, I bought an Indian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce 414ce for alot less then youll pay for a straight up 7xx, I wish I could afford a 9xx

The 700s are better? It sure didn't sound that way.

However it likely was the individual guitar.

seems people arent getting that the 700's and 800's have a different topwood... making it all preference. the 414LTD is the same as an 814 with fewer appointments.

theres a rosewood 414 at my local shop right now that I'm waiting on. i need to save up some more $ first, but yea its basically an 814 without some of the nice appointments. the wood is a little less tight in the grain but still very nice.
