Also audio engineering isn't just sound.... it's physics... you must know about Compressing...limiting... Eqing....realtime effect.... your outboard gear must be a good as your inboard.... and plus you have to have a golden ear.... and about a ZILLLION other things ..

i was given some advice a while back that its best to concentrate on getting the best sound physically rather than trying to fiddle with knobs and buttons forever to get a good sounds, i just want a solid, reliable recording source

If your serious it's not a hobby... it consumes you.... and I love what you said about physics.... you are ABSOLUTLY RIGHT... sound isn't what you think.... sound is air traveling at different speeds (freq) ... control that and you will never have problems with EQ again ( NO FEEDBACK at live SHOWS) know your range 20Hz to 20Khz !!!! Live by it!!

heheh, luckily im more concerned with learning about wave physics than fiddling with knobs

and i could be serious, its what im going to school for

Before you go to school you need some real-world exsperience.... where ever you live... go down to your local music store and try to get a job setting up PA's for people... and start engineering shows....I play also .... and engineering is FUNNER than playing.... take DMB.... great live sound.... you think the Band does that...HUHUHUH...NO.... they make up about 25% of the good sound..... the audio engineers make the SHOWS GREAT>.... if you asked Dave he would say the same thing..... one of my friends aksed him once .... LOL!

25%.. *chuckle* .. Good engineering is like icing on a cake.. you still need the cake.. and while you brought up the DMB audio crew.. the new PAs this are worse than the old ones.. and they tend to do a poor job balancing the band. :-p But, live engineering is a whole 'nother game than a studio

i would like to do that, but there just isn't any access for me to do that sort of thing, the only experience i have is through the recordings i have done so far on my own (besides, im not too concerned with live sound since i dont play live)

and im hoping to focus on playing more anyway. i want to have a balance of both

I don't get out and listen to any other bands, so maybe I have just come to expect too much.. I can imagine that most bands have a much more terrible live sound, so I can suspend my disbelief and agree that maybe it is that signfigcant of a factor.

I wouldn't call myself engineer, but I know enough to get around fairly well and enough to make things sound better than most amatuer recordings.. I have a real critical ear naturally.. and I agree that when I make something engineering it is almost as fun as recording it

[edit] Just reminded myself that I did go to a john mayer concert.. and it was much worse.. so nevermind, the DMB crew probably is doing as good as they can feasibly
