Cover: So Damn Lucky

Unread post by geekmug » Sat Jul 03, 2004 4:28 am

hey, so I have been doing other stuff than DMB stuff.. but I did one just the other day so I thought I'd drop by and annoy you.. ok, so there is a story behind this.. my friend rob has provided vocals for other covers, and plays drums too.. but typically just freeform and jamming.. so I wanted to lay something down so he could learn from what the end product of the way he tunes his kit and mics it and all that jazz is.. and then he sung 'cause I can't even touch that range on this song.. admittedly he wants to redo the main vocals again but I have this thing about spending more than one sitting recording stuff for a cover.. so he be it.. all feedback is welcome..

If you have problems with those links.. a last resort is here but is much slower.

It sounds pretty kick ass.. I like the drums.. not many covers have drums so, good job. I guess it's just a bad download for me or something, but the vocals seem to cut out sometimes for me.. Good job guys

pretty good cover. the drums are a nice change. i play this with a drummer and he plays the drums too hardcore for this song, i like the way they came out here, the vocals are pretty good too, except they cut out a lot, maybe its the DL. guitar rythm and lead at the end are good also.
is that an echo effect at the end on the yell?

woah, my bad guys.. something happened with the upload and got damaged.. I am reuploading it as I post this

[edit 3:15 EST] I think I have fixed the top two links.. sorry about that.

graves: The vocals have some spot reverb added to them on the longer held pitchs, especially the last one.. maybe too much on the last one? *shrug*

wow man. You did a beautiful job here. Everything comes together very nicely.

I have a few issues i'd like to put out to you:
1. the composition of all the sounds is very lifeless, it sounds like a band is doing a cover, that likes the song, and knows all the chorusing effects... but doesnt FEEL the music deep inside. You sound lifeless on the vocals, not musically bad, but there is no soul there, no energy. These things are essential, i mean it should always been from the heart when you sing, but mostly i think that your vocals are gorgeous, but come from no where, so they die when they hit my ears.

i.e: "Oh my god, wait and see, what will soon become of me..." that's a statement, like "holy shit..." it's got some umph, but you sing it weakly, like you're shying away from the song... i am nitpicking because the tallent is there, and the song sounds beautiful... and there's so much room to make it THAT much better.

2. The same issues with the guitar. The drummer is great... the guitar is just ... soft... it's sighing the music, instead of PLAYING it.

overal man, it's beautiful i just think that you could do some great magic with it with some more effort.

instruments are stellar as usual scott, but when did you learn to sing on key??? damn you for improving!

of course its not perfect, like xoosh said, you lacked a lot of force in your voice, but its understandable considering that its not a real easy song to sing and the fact that your singing used to suck fat donkey balls. i remember saying that you should give up singing, and i apologize for that.

this actually gives me hope that i might be able to get better if i apply myself...

I would agree here. That's my only point to critique. You don't understand how much I wish I had a friend that played drums that I could record with or just play with. You are So Damn Lucky...peace
