If I Hurry I Can Still Make Cheyenne

Unread post by GreedylilPig » Thu Jul 01, 2004 6:30 pm

I've been experimenting a lot with country music as of late and I find I'm getting rather comfortable with it. I suppose I'm wondering if it shows. Regardless, growing up a city boy this whole genre is kind of new to me. This song is called "I Can Still Make Cheyenne" and is originally performed by George Strait. Please let me know what you think.

Lyrics:

Her telephone rang 'bout a quarter to nine
She heard his voice on the other end of the line
She wondered what was wrong this time
She never knew what his calls might bring
With a cowboy like him it could be anything
And she always expected the worst in the back of her mind

He said, "It's cold out here and I'm all alone
I didn't make the short go again, and I'm comin home
I know I've been away too long
I never got a chance to write or call
And I know this rodeo has been hard on us all
But I'll be home soon and honey is there somethin wrong?"

She said, "Don't bother comin' home
By the time you get here I'll be long gone
There's somebody new and he sure ain't no rodeo man"
He said, "I'm sorry it's come down to this
There's so much about you that I'm gonna miss
But it's alright baby, if I hurry I can still make Cheyenne
Gotta go now baby, if I hurry I can still make Cheyenne"

He left that phone danglin off the hook
Then he slowly turned around and gave it one last look
Then he just walked away
He aimed his truck toward that Wyoming line
With a little luck he could still get there in time
And in that Cheyenne wind he could still hear her say

She said, "Don't bother comin' home
By the time you get here I'll be long gone
There's somebody new and he sure ain't no rodeo man"
He said, "I'm sorry it's come down to this
There's so much about you that I'm gonna miss
But it's alright baby, if I hurry I can still make Cheyenne
Gotta go now baby, if I hurry I can still make Cheyenne"

She never knew what his calls might bring
With a cowboy like him it could be anything
And she always expected the worst in the back of her mind
-Brian

that's great! Your voice sounds very good singing country, and the guitar sounded good as always.

"well i hate country, and this sounds like most of that hack country shit that makes me think of 90210 in the south...."

but let me tell you, this song moved me. it fucking made me listen. you brought me in. you made me listen like 5 times...

i really really liked it.

honestly, it was gorgeous.

i dont say this often... i really really loved it.

WOW! That is just about as good as George Strait's original...Excellent!

I would love to hear some more George Strait covers. "The Chill of Early Fall", "The Cowboy Rides Away", or "Amarillo By Morning" would sound awesome.

Long live country music and George Strait!

This is sick! I've listened to this song non-stop for the last two days and think you would make George Strait even a little nervous.

I don't have much else to say other than you sound like you go a little off on "back" -- "..in the back of her mind." Also at times you sound a little like Willey Nelson but, there's nothing bad about that at all. I think you have a great voice and I've always kept your music to put in my playlists. You did a cover of "reconcile our diferences" a while back that I also loved. Keep up the great work!

I'm very impressed, you really sound like a professional country singer. I'm not familiar with this song so I can't really give you a good critique besides what the other guys said about certain words you sung a bit off. Great Job...maybe this board should really just be a new website about all covers and critiquing...I think I'll post that...peace
