its hard to explain for me, because i dont know enough about them, but to my understanding, they either boost or get rid of dynamics to keep them in a range you define.. or something.

smooth out the attack of your notes, and makes less of a difference between low notes and high notes

It makes your really quiets a little louder and your really louds a little quieter so that there isn't a huge difference in the volume of your playing.
