hardest song to play

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Interesting enough, it seemed the hardest song for Dave to play at radio City was Satellite. Not that it was a challenge for him to play, he simply must have shook his hand about 4-5 times after that song to get the ache out.

The amanda song

Unread post by Davefan41 » Tue Apr 01, 2003 9:40 am

yeah satelitte is really tough on the hand, lots of lactic acid buildup, that is why his hand hurts, that intro riff just doesn't let up, and the chorus isn't any easier on the hand, I've only played it one time all the way through and my hand hurt for hours...I love this song though, and when I could play it perfectly for the first time I ran around my house screaming and I told everybody about it, it was kinda like that commercial where the guy tells everybody that he lowered his cholesterol, it made me really happy, it took me the better part of a year to get that song down perfectly, it's me and my girlfriends song, her name is amanda

satellite kills my hands, but its not the hardest song for me.. sometimes daves rhythms are crazy, especially on stuff like tripping billies... i still cant do that...

i think the hardest song is either satellite or the best of whats around. I can do them both a few times, but not the whole song. I really didnt think tripping billies or the stone were that hard, they just kinda clicked one day!

lol. I remember the first time I played Crash all the way through. damn the pain was almost unbearable but I finished it anyway, just to say that I did. my freaking fingers were barely fretting the strings at the end. :) Crash is the hardest song on the hand to finish, but I'd say a low to medium degree of difficulty.

as far as Jason getting offended by people who can play Dave like him is not true because he knows I can play like him and he's cool with it. right Jason?

Y'all can stop by the Acoustic Pond in the music chat rooms in Yahoo! and find me there playing some dave. There are a few more of us that come in there too. About 4 big DMB guys that I know off top of my head. All are very good. I am the guy that hardly ever sings cuz I am way off pitch...but I'm working on it...lol! But I do try to get things to sound just like Dave's, but on other things, I improv to make them have my own style to them. Like I have been doing this jamm on Two Step for like 6 months now, and to my surprise when I went to see D&T on 3-26, they did the same type of jam that I do. They may have done it before too, but it was the first time that I had heard it played like that besides when I play it. It was cool. Being able to do things note for note is cool, but I think it shows creativity when you add your own stuff in there. Just my opinion, nothing to start a war over

Oh yeah, back to the first part of the thread. Jimi thing was a pain till it just clicked one day...The Stone was probably the hardest to learn cuz I learned it wrong the first time, then I had to relearn it the right way...lol! Two Step can be tricky on the strumming. You Never Know is hard, maybe because its in a different key, but its a hard tune. It has one of the strangest strumming patterns I have ever seen. JTR took me a while to get down too. I agree with LIOG and SMTS being easy, but maybe it just clicks with how I play. Satellite is a stretch to get through the whole song, as is Crash. Rhyme and Reason is really hard too it took me forever to finally get that down. Now mind you, I dont know the whole DMB catalog, this is just what I have experienced with the ones that I play which is most tho. :)

interesting thing happened to me today, related to this...

for the longest time back in the day, i just could not strum...

i sucked....

then it was like, it just clicked one week, and i built on it

now strumming is my strength, my muting and speed are what i do best,

i had a guitar lesson today, and we talked about this, and we started to talk about faster alternate picking, and my guitar instructor explained to me that he believes rhythm and strumming is a feel, and really good alternate picking is an art, takes a lot of practice, and tons of technique, he complenmented my rhythmatic capabilities, but, stated if i wanted to go further into really really fast alternate picking, i would really need to put the time in, its not just a "feel" sort of thing he said, i was just seeing if anyone had any views on this....

yeah, rhythm and strumming is a feel but it also takes a considerable amount of practice to have strong, clock-like rhythm and too develop a wide range of strumming and muting patterns as well as wide range of chords. once you have a good number of those in your repetoire, you can mix and match and come up with some funky rhythm pieces. I consider Dave to be a master at this. however, as far as picking and lead stuff, this also takes practice and is perhaps more of a learned skill than a talent. the scales have to be practiced and the alternate picking technique as to be practiced strictly and consistently if you are to be good at it. but I think its tougher to be that kind of a player, because as far as speed goes, you either have it or you don't. At least I know I don't have the speed although I am getting a little faster, but I'm more into the rhythm side of guitar playing. hope this is making some kinda sense. in short, you must practice to be good rhythmically but that comes more or less on its own, where as the picking stuff is more of a learned skill that takes a lot of time and practice.

peace,
Ken

I dont think billies or stone are to bad either but whats hard about BOWA, that songs easy as hell, especially if you can play those other two.
