I beg to differ with the notion that his guitar work is simple. Have you ever played any of it? I mean, sure Sweet Baby James is easy enough, but it takes serious work to get both the right and left hands moving like he does, all cleanly and smoothly and in time, and then to sing over that, whew. I think most Taylor stuff is more difficult that DMB stuff.

hey tico...
Good call on Mayers lyrics...I think some of the best lyrics are the most simple...the most poetic can come in a very plain form...take early Peter Gabreil for example - very interesting in it's own right...
Anywho, Mayer is not a DAVE ripoff...If you listen to him (for example - NEON), he shares a style like that of Keller Williams...KW is far from a dave copier...
well regardless, thought I should take the chance to share my infatuation with early Genesis ; )

John Mayer & Dave Matthews are two totally separate musicians, who style sounds nothing like one another. Just because they aren't mainstream "pop" musicians they are automatically in the same category.
I like John though, he is very talented on the guitar, even more so than Dave. Howie day is interesting but can get annoying..He seems too cocky.
Jason Mraz has a beautiful voice and some nice arrangements for guitar. Keller Williams is phenomonal!!!!
Bob Schneider from Austin, TX........Graham Colton from Dallas, TX.
Virignia Coalition & Virginia Creeper also kick some ass.
Just some of my favorites

my 2 cents
1) okay so there's this whole 'Mayer plays better Guitar than Dave' bandwagon. in my mind that's just BS. just 'cos it's a different style and more complicated (and i can't play it worth a crap), doesn't mean Mayer is 'a more talented guitarist' than Dave. there are times I'd rather listen to the same 3 Dave chords over and over than i'd listen to Mayer's stuff. i still find myself listening to #41 over and over (i have a CD with 10 versions of the song that i listen more than once through - yeah call me nuts). i can't listen to any of Mayer's songs that much.
2) there's also the 'Mayer's lyrics suck' movement. this one i'm a little more partial to. that said, i wouldn't totally rule Mayer out as a song writer. yeah stuff like "whatever happened to my lunchbox" - wtf? but some of his lyrics i find quite meaningful and poetic. it takes some getting used to i guess - and if you listen to it on the right day; who knows.
3) the original question. what other influences? i wish i could be one of the cool ppl on this board that say they started learning guitar because of Dave. I borrowed my buddies guitar and the first thing i saw on olga that i could play was Oasis & Radiohead. a week later I saw the storytellers video of Crash into me and the rest is history. other influences are Mayer (*protects head with arms*), Lifehouse (*protects head with Kevlar helmet*). i guess i'm really into the British rock guys (coldplay etc.) and the independent women (Ani Defranco, Alana Davis, Shawn Colvin etc.) Also a lot of South African stuff.
