Boiling guitar strings?

Unread post by jtdevan » Tue Apr 01, 2003 1:32 pm

I was talking to my dad the other day and he said something about boiling your strings to prolong their life. I had just bought a pack of D'addario coated strings and I had no intention of putting those into a pot of steaming water!
Any of you guys know anything about that?

Boiling guitar strings????

I'm gonna guess that this is definately an April Fool's thread...

Otherwise I'm gonna say that is CRAZY!

no, its not a joke, its done. but, if theyre coated, theres not really any need.
thats pretty much it. boil them. prolong their life. buy some good strings and you dont really have to.
im wondering how to make Elixer Strings into a subliminal message.

Actually it was a pretty popular practice back in the day of the "Floyd Rose"... It was done to streach the strings so they would stay tuned faster, and longer... Made it easier to tune once, then lock it, and forget it! PLus once you locked, you flattened the string increasing the chance of break if you had to unlock and re-tune...

I did it a few times when I brought my first Krammer :) hehehe... Ohh the days... Now, I wouldn't dare try it... Most strings have some coating on them that would suffer if it was removed. Some may even rust :)....

I would recommend just buying better strings, as "Lying In My Grave" said, Elixer is what I use on both acoustic and electric.... Way much better than the strings I used to buy...

Try these Thomastik Infield strings, once you buy a set you won't use anything else.

d'addarios exp's are the best coated strings out there.....elixirs sound like you're playing with peanut butter all over your strings.

Yeah the D'Addario exp's are great...... bought my first set the other day, I was expecting them to be as crap as the elixer's (CRAP, CRAP, CRAP) but I was pleasantly surprised. :D

i like elixirs... i dont play with them on my acoustic though. apparently they discontinued 12 string sets... do they make d'addario exp 12 strings? i need to replace them, last time i restrung was 4 months ago... i hate restringing it. it sucks lol. my electric is so much easier to restring..
