What role does tab play in your learning process?

Topics about musical instruments other than guitar should go here. There's bound to be a Carter, LeRoi, or Yo-Yo Ma out there.

What role does tab play in your learning process?

I try to figure it out myself, then check myself against the tab.

I figure out what I can for myself, then use tab to get past a tough spot.

I look at the tab before I even start playing a song.

I almost always check out the tab before I start to learn a song, just to make sure it's not over my head.

btw, this might not be the best forum

it depends on the song, sometimes, a song will seem completely over your head and you thing "i have no idea where to start" but once you look at a tab you realize its not that bad. but it does help you get better ear-wise by listening to something and trying to figure it out. thats what victor wooten did when he was a kid(when there were no internet tabs): hed take any instrument and try to figure out a song on the bass, even going so far as to making drum solos on the bass, which ultimately has made him who he is today.

It's a question for the bassist...

I used to just look at the tab before anything. Lately I've been trying to figure it out for myself. However lately I've been working on theory and stuff, which makes tabbing much easier.

Personally, I think tab is a good place for a beginner to start. But after a while, you need to start trying to figure stuff out for yourself. Being able to hear a note and quickly find it on the fretboard is crucial to getting anywhere with the instrument. At that point, I encourage someone to try and learn it themselves, then find a reliable tab to check it against.

I have absolutely no problem providing tabs as people request them, I like doing it, and I find it is a good exercise to practice my hearing skills. But really, I do encourage you to start going as far as you can on your own, then coming back to check your progress against the tab.
