Flea and Wooten

Topics about musical instruments other than guitar should go here. There's bound to be a Carter, LeRoi, or Yo-Yo Ma out there.

claypool is a good bassist - really skilled guy. bit strange at times, but overall an awesome musician.

wooten, claypool, marcus miller, steven bailey, jaco, larry graham, bootsy, stefan are some of my top favs - got countless bassist that kick ass out there. I always leave out some of the best ones it seems.

but overall, anything vic writes or says becomes my bible haha

tietjen2k wrote:as for dueling, dueling on instruments is common. You'll hear of dueling banjos ect, its mainly when one player goes and plays a few lines then the next player has to match it - all improv. Something fun to do with your friends.
if its meant as something fun to do between friends, then dont use it as an example of how one musician is better than the other, thats just childish and arrogant

....

dueling is something you can use for anything. I've seen two rival guitarist duel live and a local band concert. dueling is something you can do for fun, or for a comparison or both. I never said it was for friends alone, but its something you can do with friends.

i still dont see how thats childish or arrogant...

i used dueling as an example because anyone whos ever seen Vic improv a solo (as he does at every flecktones solo - they give him like a 20 minute session just by himself messing around) would know that seeing flea trying to counter that would be nearly impossible. thats why i used the example of dueling.

AS A BASS PLAYER i dont think flea could compare to victor.

i think the point im trying to make is that WHO FUCKING CARES. you can keep comparing them using stupid bass jargon, but it doesn't matter. they are both good and fun to listen to.

trying to convince someone that one of those musician's is better is useless and it makes it seem like you are trying to impress us by throwing fancy terms and acting like you know what you are talking about

what did i throw in that was so fancy....?

....dueling is common. im not trying to impress anyone lol. I never recognized dueling as fancy...at all...people do it all the time - victor and bela duel constantly as do other musicians ON STAGE....carter and futureman have dueled onstage - looooooooads of people do it. I thought you guys would know what a musical duel was lol

what im trying to say is bassists who deserve it dont get enough spotlight. i think the teen to early 20s generation who arent bass players really ignore all the greats out there and that those guys deserve some credit.

i agree but there is no question that wooten is technically a better and more diverse player than flea.

your attempt at fancy jargon was in your first post

i know exactly what a musical duel is, i just think its a stupid way to compare musicians (which really is stupid as well in most cases)

and why is it such a big deal that certain people dont appreciate good music? if you spend all your time worrying about other people's taste in music, then you are wasting your time and distracting from spending time appreciating music yourself. after all, other people's opinions isn't going to change how the music sounds to you, now is it?

and what do you mean by "what if they dueled?" how do you duel someone on a musical instrument??
to me that showed you didnt know "exactly" what dueling was....so i explained it. I figured thats what you ment by being fancy. What was so fancy in my first post that other bassists wouldnt be able to understand?

the reason i expressed this is cause all i seem to see nowadays is people raving about flea flea flea flea and how amazing his basslines are. when was the last time when you heard a group of average teenagers at a highschool go "damn, jacos a beast."

no it wont change how the music sounds, but it will change the social aspect of bass. i personally thing the social aspect of your instrument is very well needed, along with debates and chalenging things. you cant be a good musician from just playing in my eyes.

i dont think its dumb at all, exploring your surroundings as a musician, socially interacting and learning from other musicians, speaking with nonmusicians about what kind of music their into and why, and understanding other types of music besides the ones you like are all very vital to be a good musician in my eyes.

i really feel like you have to understand many aspects outside of your playing to fully grow.

and as for the sarcasum...lol...its ok if you didnt know what it was. its really no big deal

even after it you were questioning dueling and what it was though, you have a strange sense of sarcasm, but hey ill take it.

Who cares.

These kinds of comparisons are apples to oranges and it is just dumb.

It is interesting to note that the person that started this thread probably hasn't actually paid attention to Flea for 15 years.

i dont think comparing bassists or guitarist or drummers is stupid or dumb or anything and im not mad or anything...but i think we can all agree that the reason flea doesnt compare to victor wooten is because....no one does. plain and simple.
