"More Love" and Vic's tenor bass

Topics about musical instruments other than guitar should go here. There's bound to be a Carter, LeRoi, or Yo-Yo Ma out there.

"More Love" and Vic's tenor bass

Unread post by kopie101 » Fri May 28, 2004 11:08 pm

hey does anyone know...well really any of this information:
1. a tab/pointers about how to play "more love" by victor wooten
2. any specifics about what vic says is a "tenor" bass which he uses on the song, he says its tuned differently, but do you have to have a specific bass to tune it this way (which he says is A-D-G-C).
thanks.

tenor bass is a bass tuned ADGC

I think you need certain strings. i don't know much about it. he says he has it tuned ADGC for this song. Don't ask why.

more love- mostly harmonics. He'll slap a G and then strum a harmonic octave, like this:

strum the 7's

C:----------7(harmonic)------
D:-----------7(harmonic)------
G:----5(slap)--------------
A:----------------------

he does that with a few root notes on the G string and a few fills, thats just what i hear.

this is in victor book, "the best of victor wooten"

really suggest you get it. its an awesome book.

I'm having a bit of trouble with it cause hes strumming all 4 strings constantly up and down with his thumb but keeping everything nice and clean and keeping the harmonics crisp...its a real tough song to get down

by the way, whenever you see him use his tenor bass, yes its ADGC.

I dont have a problem tuning to it. Just have to make sure you tune loosening and not tightening.

The strings get really relaxed from this tuning and harder to control.

But for more love he actually drops C to B for the harmonics. So its actualy ADGB.

You don't need "special strings." But you would have to buy either a 6-string set, or a 5-string EADGC set and throw out the low strings. You will probably need to adjust your intonation, and while it might not be required, you might want a different nut with narrower slots.

Victor has a bass permanently setup as a "tenor bass" which is really the only practical solution.
