help on buying new martin guitar

Unread post by trebor » Thu Mar 27, 2003 8:32 am

im going to buy a new martin guitar nd i need help
i like to play dmb and phish songs so i was thinking of gettnig a martin acoustic electric.
1.) should i get a regular acoustic instead of acoustic electric (i like to play dmb more) and just use pickups?
2.) im deciding over the martin dx1 or martin 00CXAEBLACK
the problem with the martin 00CXAEBLACK is that it says in the reviews that its "easy" to play, but i dont want an easy to play guitar coz i want to get good. what are your opinions?

thank you very much

To begin, when it says "easy to play" it is probably reffering to the action of the guitar (distance from string to fretboard) which means that you can press strings down with ease. That is a good thing in my mind. "Easy" does not mean that you will pick up the guitar and all of a sudden play like Dave Matthews or Tim Reynolds. Dont buy a guitar based on a guitar review either. I would play each and go with what feels the best.

I have no experience with electronics and pickups some someone else would be better to answer that.

hi thanks, ive been playing already for quite a while now and i think i deserve a new guitar by now coz mine really sucks.
but i was thinking if i had a guitar with the strings harder to press, i would improve even better...

but i guess my main thing is, should i get an acoustic/electric or acoustic only? i want to play some phish songs to, you guys think i would be able to play that in an acoustic guitar that i just put pickups on? coz i think i regular acoustic would sound better than acoustic electric, even though its martin, right?
my guitar right now is an classical acoustic but with nylon strings...
see the thing is i dont know jackshit about electric or acoustic electric...
lastly does anybody know what effect trey anastasio uses on his guitar that it achieves his guitar sound?
thanks

trust me, you don't want strings that are harder to play. you don't want to have to work harder. a good instrument makes your life easier so that you can focus more on making art as opposed to just getting sound out.

in terms of acoustics/acoustic electrics, having electronics installed in the guitar in no way affects the guitar's sound, so go with whatever you want/budget allows there.

I'de have to agree on the D-15. I almost bought an X series guitar, but after playing one I though the sound was not whole as the D-15's. If you can swing it, go for the D-15, its a solid body guitar and it sound awsome for the price. I ended up going with a Takamine and have benn happy with it, but make sure you play them all b4 you buy.

I think you should look at the DCME it's a great guitar, it's a cutaway model, i'm not sure if you want that. But mine sounds amazing. I would go with electronics becuase the fishman are great and if you ever want to play live or jam with friends it's good.

to add to my post, i have to agree with you that Phish is great and you would probably be able to get the good guitar sound by buying a compresser, or something like that, but i would get electronics.
