This is what I was told:
I just tried it here, and regardless of my skill, I think the effects really helped... peaceMWR wrote:The best effect you can use is a bit of reverb on the guitar/vocals. It should be pretty subtle. You also want to add some compression and e.q. I've found that if all your doing is recording guitar and vocals these three things are all you need.

i find that reverb is most important. it adds depth to the mix, and you can get a variety of sounds using different types of reverbs. esp if you record in your bedroom, you will need reverb to "simulate" you being in a studio, club, music hall, etc. next i would say you definitely want to use some amount of compression, esp on tracks that vary in levels (such as vocals). just compress a few dbs before it becomes noticable--this will help out your mix tremendously. these, with eq, i would say are the most commonly used effects on all mixes.
other than that, depending on what type of sound you are going for, there are tons of effects you could use.

I agree a lot with the compressor and e.q. nothing fancy, but it improves the quality a lot. just by turning the treble down a little and the bass up a little, I was able to get rid of the hissing noise. and compressor definitely helped out with the loud voice causing the track to buzz

I'm not sure if it's in the tutorial, but first, of course, select the entire wave (Under Edit or Ctrl+A).
For compression I go to Effects -> Amplitude -> Dynamics Processing... then I choose the Classic SoftKnee preset, but you can mess around and do whatever you want.
For EQ I go to Effects -> Filters -> Graphic Equalizer... then I think I've used the Premaster EQ preset just cause I liked the sound or something, but again you can do whatever. I don't know if you are forgetting Reverb, but I think that it adds a lot and is the coolest thing to mess around with for vocal and guitar tracks.
I'm not a 'Cool Edit Pro' though, I'm just learning myself, but that has worked fairly well for me...maybe someone else will post something more intellegent than mine. On a side note, I think I just don't like my guitar anymore... I want a Martin... anyway, good luck...peace

Yeah, I definitely like that preset...Trippin Hillbilly wrote:For vocals I tend to use a little reverb with the ''Vocal-Nice presence'' preset quite alot.
