quick easy question on SMTS

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

quick easy question on SMTS

Unread post by HCHaikuWarrior » Tue Jun 15, 2004 4:48 pm

Dave plays this once then the intro twice as one rotation of verse
E:------5-------------------------------
B:------5-------------------------------
G:------5---4\6-------------10----------
D:---------------7------5---7--------7--
A:--------------------3-----x------5----
E:-3\5--------------1------/10---3------
(2) 4 (1) 2 1 2 4 (3) 1 2 4

On the slide to the 10....what fret do you slide from?

Im guessing from 1 or 0. since there is no number before the slide Id say 0 but for time maybe 1. I dont know. Never tried that song.

I think I slide from the 3rd...but I'm not sure, I don't pay attention.

Edit: and come to think of it, I think I do it on the A string too...hmmm, not sure...

i believe you are suppose to do it from the 3rd fret, (i know there's been a thread on this before somewhere, about how all /x slides without any reference to a starting point means the 3rd fret) but, i tend to do it from the 4th because my ring finger is already right in that position. [/i]

i have another quick easy question. do you guys actually play the 4/6 -> 7 part after the 555? maybe i'm just not fast enough, but it seems like Dave skips the 4/6 and just plays 7, or just plays 7 and skips the 4/6. i can't tell cause it goes by too fast.

He does the 4/6 immediatly after the 5. its just one quick downstroke and the next downstroke is the 4/6.

does anybody else play the 555 with their ring finger flat across the fifth fret with a sharper angle on the stroke so to just hit the last 3 strings? It seems a lot easier then trying to flatten my pinky

EDIT: I also use my ring for the initial slide from 3/5

just try using your pinky for a while. I use to do what you did and gave the pinky a try and I know find it a bit more convenient.espeacillay getting that 4/6 in there.

I dont see how it could be any more convienent then using my ring finger, I'll never switch. But *Gasp*, I dont look like dave when i play it. I was just seeing if anyone else does it like that

I guess I never realized the fingerings that dave uses for this song. I barre the 5's with my ring finger too, I dont see any advantage to using the pinky. It seems like it would make it harder for me at least. Screw that, either works, personal preference.

As for getting the 4/6 in there, unless your hands are tiny or something, that doesnt help any, I have no problems gettin that in for this song. I happen to think this is one of the Dave songs that I play about as close to Dave as possible.

I do out of convenience. Not because Dave does it.
