oh it's not negative! it's really hard to express emotion over internet but you have to give every post the benefit of the doubt. And, yes i could have perhaps phrased it nicer. That's my bad. sorry if it offended but i tried to qualify with the "sarcasm" line at the end.Ranting Thespian wrote:grock wrote:uh "only"?!? that's the most important thing in a guitar is the tone! it's also the "only" thing different between a taylor and a martin. and the "only" thing different between a gibson and a fender.incubusdmb5 wrote:so the only thing different about hollow or semi is the tone?
sorry for the sarcasm. your comment just begged for it.
We don't need such negativity here. You could have phrased that a lot nicer. Isn't this board supposed to be friendly and peaceful? that was mean, and hurtful.
that's pretty much right, but i think Rant had it closer.crash_in_to_me wrote: hollow body is just a regular acoustic... ie. dreadnaught
a semi hollow is like a guitar with f holes or like those huge guitars you see the blues players with that look like acoustic bodies with humbuckers
like this... (semi hollow)

Hollow is just as it sounds. it's hollow. But it doesn't necessarily have a soundhole. and it doesn't mean it is really big either (like an acoustic). you can have a small hollowbody. or a shallow hollowbody.
Semi hollow means it has something connecting the top and bottom of the guitar within the hollow part. usually a block of wood under the bridge. since hollow body guitars are prone to feedback problems, this can help lessen that. again there is no necessity for a soundhole (or f-holes)
Solid is a block of wood. This can have a soundhole like the old chet's had.
my preference is semi-hollow, cuz it's easier to control the feedback, and with a solid it's hard to explore using feedback. The darn things have like infinite sustain (with amp loud enough for good feedback). also the solid guitars are so heavy. by the end of a gig you can have a pretty sore shoulder. and so in a lot of ways i guess the semihollow is kinda a compromise.
PS i reread my post and it does sound kinda jerky so i apologize again. it was never my intent. i'm always just trying to help.
