I use my thumb and middle finger. I have no idea if there's a "correct" manner, but that's most comfortable for me.
Stay with me, safe and ignorant.

I hold my hand closed. I used to have it open like yours, but not anymore.

thumb and index. When I'm picking I can't help to rest my pinky on the pickguard. It look like you do that to by your picture. anyone else do this? is it wrong?

i thought i heard that your supposed to always keep your pinky on the pick guard(when picking) and your supposed to hold the pick with your thumb, pointer and middle fingers. i think i read that somewhere in a mel grey chord, scale and appregio book. but i can't keep my pinky on the pick guard, i just taught myself where all the strings were. i hold the pick with my thumb, pointer and middle.

Do whatever is right for you. I have had a lot of people tell me, JOSH your holding the pick the wrong way!!!
THere is no correct way of basically anything on guitar, do whatever is you.
I strum with thumb, index, and middle, i pick (fast) the same way.
Slow picking I put my pinky on the pick guard and use my thumb and index. I have also done Thumb and ring finger to make kind of a plucking sound (also better for keeping beat with picking)

Dude, I have been playing that way ever since I picked up the guitar.
it gives you great control when playing techinical songs but when it comes down to hardcore strumming I need to take my pinky off the pickgaurd.
That's when I start losing my pick.
The downside to what we do is that you cramp very easily.
