Jimmy Fallon's version of SMTS....

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Jimmy Fallon's version of SMTS....

Unread post by myonlybliss » Tue Jun 08, 2004 1:39 pm

I am pretty new at guitar so here is what I'm wondering. After watching Jimmy play smts, he plays the song almost nothing like Dave plays it. He plays all simple chords it looks like. So why does it soud just like the song? If you were to ask anyone who hasn't played or seen the real tabs for SMTS, they would have no idea that it wasn't accurate. In other words--everyone knew immediately what song he was playing.

Why does it sound so accurate yet is so much different than what Dave plays?

I haven't watched it in a while, but I imagine it's the same basic chords / root notes as the actual song, so it's able to carry the melody and sound similar to the song.

i'm pretty sure he just slides up to an e based A chord, then d minor, then g. if you look at the first part of the song and break it down, you end up with a bar A chord, 5x76xx. then the chord 10x710xx is a dm chord. then the 357xxx is a Gadd9 (kinda), but g major sounds basicly the same. so, in summery, most complicated songs can be broken down into easy chords. but they don't sound as good...

It looks like he stays on the fifth fret barre chord shape for the entire song. First he plays an A barre chord 577655. During the part where you walk up the 1 3 5 to the 10 7 10 chord--Jimmy plays x57765 it looks like?

E:------5-------------------------------
B:------5-------------------------------
G:------5---4\6-------------10----------
D:---------------7------5---7--------7--
A:--------------------3-----x------5----
E:-3\5--------------1------/10---3------

Personally, I thought it sounded nothing like so much to say. I remember being pissed when I saw it. If you're gonna make fun of Dave, at least get the guitar part right.

it was funny i thought. I dont thin he was "making fun" of dave. He's a comedian, he was just tryin to come up with something halfway original and get a laugh.

He does the slid, and then strums three chords. He is just playing the basic form of the song, no frills that Dave always has to make it unique and fun to play. Personaly, it wasn't funny, a little insulting (but he is a dmb fan, actualy), but just stupid . . . but most of everything on SNL nowadays is stupid, and not funny. The last truely good comedian on SNL was Will Farrell, and half the time he was on the show, the rest sucked. I have to say, after Mike Myers leaving SNl, it just went downhill. If only the old guys (minus John Bulushi, because he is dead, and Chevy Chase, because he is an ass to everyone and most of the time he was on, whenever he guest starred after he left, everyone hated to work with him, by their own words, there is a book about SNL that came out recently with tons of interviews, and most people hated working with him).

Anyways, he plays a very simple basic version of the song with the bass slide. And it was stupid.

Fallon's version is off enough to make it good for singing a parody. That kind of thing helps make it a little more comedic, even though I didnt think the skit was that great.

If you have an ear, it really doesnt sound like the song at all though.

i agree, it doesn't sound exactly like DMB...but it does resemble the song a little...i categorize this the same way i would when will farrell and anna gasteyer do the piano parody...obviously there's is way more comical
