A few questions ...

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

A few questions ...

Unread post by DMBHead » Tue Jun 08, 2004 2:23 am

Ok, well first off ... I'm new to the boards so, hey! Anyways, I've been teaching myself to play guitar since i was 12 or 13 (I'm 19 now) and I've ALWAYS loved Dave's stuff but I have a problem. My hands are a little small and some of the stretches are really really hard. I can play Crash, some of Crush, Granny, Christmas Song, Where are You going ... stuff like that. I really really really want to learn So Much to Say (eek) and What Would You say (I tried and gave up)... just to name a few. Do you all have any suggestions or is Dave's stuff just not for me? I guess it's good that I don't have problems with muting strings lol. Oh, please don't laugh at my only being able to play the easy songs . Thanks!

no, dave's stuff is certainly not out of your reach

just keep at it, try playing stuff slow, practice the stretches

if you need, run searches on particular songs to see what people have said, and if you can't find things to help you, go ahead and post up a question, we're glad to help

anyways, good luck my friend

welcome to the boards

DMBHead....welcome to DMBTabs!!

Like matty said, these songs are def not out of your reach. The stretches just need some time to "set in" so to speak. The songs that did it for me was #41 and Trippin Billies (nature intro). Practice both of those slowly, and strive for precision....after a while, you will notice that the stretches will not be as difficult.
It's hard for me to explain, but now, after playing allot of Dave's songs for an extended period, my hand hurts....but it feels like a good type of hurt...kind of like after a good workout in the gym.

Keep at it...and don't be a stranger to the boards!!
You're only as strong as the tables you dance on.

I'll add another "practice practice practice" to the pile. If you're having problems with stretches and you can play Crash you're on your way.

took me FOREVER to learn WWYS, and SMTS for that matter, but one day it'll just click, now they're no problem - just have fun and work at it! :D

Welcome to the Boards....

If you can comfortably stretch your hands on Crash (assuming you are playing correctly) then you don't have small hands.

But SMTS verse has no stretching that I can recall. However, the Chorus does, I would practice Satellite, which has the same progression for the first 3 notes of SMTS chorus (stretch parts)..

I dont believe there is any stretching in WWYS. IS there?

I think that the chorus is a A D G D for so much to say, isn't it? The verse has that 1 3 5 10x7 10 then 3 5 7 in it..

Yeah if you've got crash, you can play dave. its definitely a unique style, which is why I think its so much fun to play. smts and wwys you just gotta mute them strings!
