What the hell happen to the topic?
I will say that John Mayer on electric is pretty good, I love Covered In Rain. But as for as acoustic goes they often sound similar I think, more of John sounding like Dave. And lets face it Dave looks a little strange on stage with his electric in his hands, while John can light the thing on fire at times.
Dave is the best at what he does with his acoustic, his words fit with his guitar like no one else, I think John has yet to catch up to him on the blending and maybe the elegance of it, and thats maybe where the 8 years come in for Dave.
My 2 cents if any of that makes sense.

I think madtadder won I mean, John is better technically, Dave has better rhythm. Dave's rhythmic ability surpasses most people I’ve ever heard.

i would say based on a rhythm guitar standpoint, dave is better. they are both talented at rhythm guitar, and very similar in certain aspects, but dave's rhythm's (not really as of recently, but overall) are much more complex and overall pleasing. lead guitar, well no contest there...

see the thread "Wannabe Daves" for more on the whole dave vs. mayer debate.

Have you heard his first album, Inside Wants Out? Full acoustic (to my knowledge, except for some of the electric fills)... I would say John beats dave a little bit in these (check out victoria, neon <-- from inside wants out, not room for squares)

not entirely true. back to you and neon (12:47 am) are electric. however, you are correct, it is much more of an acoustic album than rfs.

comparing apples to oranges again are we? anyway, we know Dave is great, we know Mayer is great or at least has the ability to be great. They play with different styles, but both are very creative in their song writing. I guess if your talking best pure guitarist, Mayer is better but Tim Reynolds is better than Mayer. that being said, Dave is the best songwriter ever.
        good, and you?

Well I did say with a few electric fills... but in both songs the main rhythm and leads are both acoustic, no?

no, in both songs the main rhythm is an electric guitar. neon (12:47 am) is a very distorted electric and back to you is a fairly clean electric. and fyi, the drums in back to you, is supplied by a little drum machine. just thought i'd let everyone know that.

neon on room for squares it sounds like he's fingerpicking an electric. I definately prefer the acoustic version.

we're talking about different neons. on the original release of inside wants out, it had two neons. a neon (which is the first jm song i ever heard, and still gives me goosebumps) and neon (12:47 am), which is the electric jammed out one. however, on the re-release of iwo, 12:47 am was removed so you probably havent heard it. sorry for the confusion.

Ahhh. (Amen to the goosebumps.) Thanks for clearing that up for me, I do have the re-release because I couldn't get the original before they discontinued.
