What song are you learning?

Unread post by You_Enjoy_Myself » Sun Jun 06, 2004 2:10 pm

Just wondering what kind of stuff everyone is learning right now and how long it takes you to get a song to the point where you feel you could play it in public.

I justed learned "Sucker" by John Mayer, it took about 3 days before I felt really confident with it. Cool tune, check it out

Spent about 20 minute son it last night got tired and went to bed. Undecided if I want to continue to learn it or work on an original I started writing yesterday.

I'm learning Clapton's "Classical Gas" and Pachabel's Canon (arran. in D). The left hand piano part is easy, and the right hand is just long and takes a while to memorize.

These song's I've been learning for a while... Everyone once in a while I'll learn another few measures or so.

did eric clapton even do a version of classical gas? or is that a mistake? because its not his song, it was written by mason williams and i can't find any info on if clapton did a version.

If I'm ever having trouble learning a song, like I just can't get the chord progression into my brain, or I just can't make the chord shapes, I'll just leave the song alone for a day. While you sleep, your brain converts temporary memory to permanent memory, and the next day it'll be easier to remember progressions and chord shapes. At least thats how my brother explained it to me.

Sounds believable, whenever I cant get a song down, if I leave it alone for a few days and come back to it, its normally a lot easier. I thought SDL was like impossible the first time I tried it, a few weeks later I tried it again and played it almost perfectly within a few minutes, now I cant stop playing it. I really need to learn some new non-dave songs, I feel so gay when Im at parties and I have to actually stop and think about a non dave song I know that I can play. I used to be able to play so many I just fogort them or I just dont memorize the ones I learn these days. Im gonna start gettin away from dave and learn a bunch of new stuff hopefully, Ive got a list, maybe Ill get crackin this week.

I usually set aside 3-4 hours a day for practice, no matter how tired I am from work or whatever, so I get to practice alot of songs at once. Right now I'm learning...

1. Bach- Air on the G String
2. Radical Dreamers~ The Unspoken Jewel (Video Game, Chrono Cross ending song)
3. Dio- Sacred Heart, Rock n' Roll Children, and Last in Line
4. Nevermore- Poison God Machine

Hehe, that video game shit is hard...

Well, I would say mute any strings you're not using when those chords come up so you can use a pick.

No...because your killing the song by using a pick, classical is to be finger picked in order to keep the bass notes properly, it just takes practice to finger pick, just arpeggiate basic chords with your fingers to practice. I'll post some of my old lessons online if anyone wants them...
