Guitar- Dave Matthews or John Mayer?

Unread post by Doron Diamond » Sun Mar 23, 2003 4:01 pm

I've been curious as to what you guys think for a while now. Who is a better guitarist? I know it's two different styles, but who do you think is a better guitarist overall? To me it seems that Dave is the king at his own unique style, but that John Mayer is a better guitarist overall. Some of the stuff Mayer does is incredible. Anyway, I'm honestly curious as to what you guys think. Also, aside from that, how good a guitarist do you think Dave is aside from his own songs? I mean, he's played his own songs 1000s of times each now, so of course he can do it in his sleep (I bet he could deliver the Gettysburg Address while playing the Stone:)) and I'm sure he could hold his own just fine doing other things, but how is Dave relative to other great guitar players in the world? Can't wait to here your opinions.

sometimes people tend to deviate from what truly matters the most..."great music" and a "great time"...in that case....Dave Matthews is the greatest guitarist of all time...LATE!

Creatively, I think dave is a better guitarists because his unique style is so awesome. Technically, I think John is way better, he also incorporates a lot of jazz elements in his music. Just listen to a live version of neon, its awesome

My immediate response is to also say John is way better, but a few things make me think twice. Just watching something like Dave playing the Stone with such perfection, or being able to sing with any of his songs make me think that his guitar playing is so good that everything is second nature. That, and, even if John were better, Dave his about 8 years on him, so maybe he also has 8 years more experience, and thus is better? I don't know...

I think another thing to consider is that Dave isn't a real flashy/show-off guitar player so we might not have a real idea of what he's capable of.

true dat...I mean, has anyone ever heard dave attempt a solo...or does that even make a difference...Dave is better at what he does, than Mayer will ever be at what he does...

If Mayer is better than dave, than tim reynolds is better than dave and mayer, dimebag darrel(pantera) is better than dave and mayer, lead guitarist of metallica is better than dave and mayer, jimi hendrix is better than dave and mayer, even the guy down at guitar center is better than mayer and dave..the list goes on and on...

but hey, do we listen to all those other people like pantera, metallica, etc.
....

no...

we listen to dave matthews...because to us...he is the best.

well, IMO, if you dont think that dave is the best guitarist ever, than you are abberrated...peace!

Yeah, I have heard Dave do solo stuff. He tries on Listener Supported a little. It's nothing overwhelming, but it's not bad either.

John Mayer is a way better guitarist. The quality of a musician has NOTHING to do with how much they are listened to. The likes of Britney Spears should make that PAINFULLY apparent.

And there is no way in hell that Dave Matthews is the greatest guitarist of all time.

what the heck? i responded to this thread, and did so respectfully, without a single mentioning of your person. there was nothing derogatory or inflammatory about my post, and look what you manage to come up with. oh that's right, i forgot, people can't have opinions that are different than yours. sorry, i'll try and remember that you're bigoted like that next time.

hey jason, let me give you a hint. when discussing something with another person, it's best not to use the word "fuck" every other word, and secondly, it's best to actually respond to what is said, as opposed to changing the subject when you know you can't respond because the other person is right.

Dude, this thread is brand new. It's not like it's been buried and I dug it up to respond to something you said. I've been involved in several conversations about this in other threads, so it should be pretty easy to see that you are not the center of attention here. Sorry Jason.

that's right jason. my world revolves around you.

the only reason i left these boards for a while is that i was so sick of you. i decided to check back in, and look who's up to his old tricks! maybe i do jump to the worst conclusions with you too quickly, but it's only because of the way you've acted in the past, which you have demonstrated beautifully in you last few posts. no reason to believe you've changed when your words show otherwise.
