Off-key Backup Singers
So last night I'm at this little party at my friends house and they bring out a guitar and ask me to play some stuff. So I play a little dave and then start on some Paul Simon. While I'm playing Simon, some people join in singing the song(it was "late in the evening" btw) and someone is just butchering it. Well I couldn't concentrate on the song and I started singing off-key!!!
So, I squealed my way through the song(a very short version), and then put the guitar down. Buddy who was singing off-key came up to me later and was like "aw dude, we did an awesome version of that song" and I just smiled and nodded. Should I have handled it differently? Should I have stopped playing, told the guy to shut the fuck up and then continue playing? Has anyone ever had this problem before??

well if it was a party then forget about it, everyone is just having fun.. hell I sing the words to songs I have never heard before when I am drunk.... of course I don't actually know the words. One of my favorite songs is 'pour some sugar on me,' everyone knows the chorus.. and that is about it.
But if you were actually trying to sound good maybe you should tell him he is a terrible singer....... all my friends sure let me know and I just keep right on singin!

I would have said:
I can't really hear myself up here, no offense, but could you guys (make it so you don't single out the person, and talk to the crowd like one person) keep it down, thanks a bunch
(really smile, give a peace sign, or a thumbs up).
That way, you get your point across, no problems.
But then again, I don't go to parties where people drink . . . actualy I never go to parties. Whenever I am in a big group of people (over 5), I never have known why, but people ignore me almost completely, no matter what I do.

Thing is, you were at a little house party, if you would have said something you might have looked like a tool. You did your thing and it may not have sounded that good to you, the folks at the party thought it was cool. (Doesn't alcohol make things better?)
I think you handled it well by not saying anything.

Forget about the reasons and the treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away

IMO, nope, just give me some caffeine
I know I think that I sound decent when I'm loaded and then when I go back to the tape for verification, well, let's just say my perception of my musical ability was significantly impaired.
