ITS HERE ITS HERE OMG XDXDXD

Topics about musical instruments other than guitar should go here. There's bound to be a Carter, LeRoi, or Yo-Yo Ma out there.

You should be pretty happy with that setup. I've had some different Ampeg gear over the last couple of years, and I'm now using an Ampeg SVP-PRO preamp through a QSC poweramp into an SWR cab. I want to try the new SVP-CL preamp, which supposedly is pretty faithful to the vintage SVT tone. Anyone have $500 laying around?

I did until about 11am today. I've spent hours just playing with the knobs and finding tones. So much can be squeezed out of this thing.

Well, Modulus and Warwick aren't the "top" . . . They are great instruments, I have a Modulus, but it isn't the best out there. . .

I had a full-blown Ampeg SVT-CL rig for a while. The 300-watt all tube head and the 8x10 cabinet. The cab was just too big and I don't regret selling it, but I do wish I had kept the head, even though it weighed 80 pounds. I'm currently playing an Ampeg SVP-PRO preamp into a QSC poweramp. 1600 watts bridged, 500 watts per side at 4 ohms in stereo mode. My current setup is nice, and very lightweight, but the tone doesn't hold a candle to the all-tube head. My cabinet is an SWR Goliath III 4x10. Great cabinet, don't see myself trading it off anytime soon. At some point I'll probably put a 1x15 under it for a little more girth.

My first real rig was the Goliath cab with an SWR 350x. The head was weak, it couldn't keep up, and to my ears the SWR head + SWR cab was too hi-fi and "thin" sounding. The Ampeg preamp thickens up the tone nicely while the SWR cab keeps the clarity and definition.

I like the component preamp + poweramp route because it allows me to switch out preamps to get different tones for cheaper than replacing a whole head. The QSC delivers the same power as an Ampeg SVT-4 Pro or an SWR SM-900. I had an SWR Interstellar Overdrive preamp (great sounding overdrive, but too thin in "clean" mode), traded that for an SWR Grand Prix preamp (more versatile clean tone, huge low-end, but not enough thickness in the midrange), now I have the SVP-PRO which I'm pretty happy with. I would like to try some different preamp tubes in it.

My advice is buy used when you can. I sold the two SWR preamps for what I paid. I got the SVP for $270. You take a risk buying used, but I've never had any trouble. The people on talkbass and bassgear.com are generally honest and reliable. I haven't used eBay.

While I agree that Modulus and Warwick aren't absolutley the best, I've long been a believer that the "best" of something is whatever you think is best for you. For example, some peole absolutley love Conklins...however I just don't find them enjoyable to play. A friend of mine swears to his mothers grave that his stingray is the best bass he's played. I despise that thing. Some people hate Warwicks, I love them. Some people hate the graphite neck of a modulus, others think that it is a godsend.
