harmonic minor?

ok so i'm always learning these new scales and stuff, and i was wondering, when can you USE this one??

it seems like the raised 7th would clash with most normal chord progressions...the scale has such a cool sound, but when can you actually put it to use?

I would say you would use the scales in improv mostly, although I havn't gotten a whole lot into it. I suppose you could use it in writting song although i havn't seen it that commonly used. Peace.

yeah but if you improv, wont the raised 7th clash with ....everything?

harmonic minor is used a lot more than natural minor. the raised 7th scaled degree makes the V chord a major which helps to define the key. the raised 7 scale degree won't clash but actually strengthen the song. Ticohans could explain this a lot better than I can but. the raised scale degree 7 does 2 things: one it provides a leading tone for scale degree 1, and 2 it makes the V chord a major which is what you want and is what you see more than having a minor as a V chord as in natural minor.

It was posted on here that the harmonic minor controls the tonal quality of the dominant (V) chord. This is true. It won't cause dissonance even when played with scales because that raised 7th acts as a leading tone to the tonic. I suggest using it in improvs and leads because it isn't used much and it adds a nice "eastern" type sound.
