its pretty amazing
its pretty amazing
when you think about it all the "great" guitarists...bb, freddie, jimmy, jimi, srv van halen etc all played out screaming solos and mostly did new stuff, and by doing this they inspired millions of people to play guitar. compared to them, dave is a beginner at guitar, but its amazing how his relative simply riffs have themselves inspired millions to play. yea i'm slightly insane, i just thought this was pretty cool.

Personally, I've never been a fan of people that live by solos. A good melody is much more satisfying to me, and much harder to find as well. That's what i love about Tim, for the most part his music is an accent to what dave is playing, so when he does solo, it stands out, but isn't overbearing. But tim's solos are really much like the van halen, Jimi, type solos. The thing that always interested me is that there were a bunch of people that played acoustic before dave, the beatles, James Taylor, and others i'm sure i'm forgetting right now, but Dave was the first that made it "cool".

while i do like scorching solos from time to time, i love melodic solos. a great example is God of Wrath by the David Crowder Band... the solo (at least off TheLimeCD) is beautiful, and they can easily do much faster.

Re: its pretty amazing
The wonderful thing about Dave's music is that it forces beginning guitarist to really spend time with it. Theres people who play for years and only know open position chords. If you wanna play Dave you have to make an actual commitment that gives the guitar the respect it deserves.Granny33 wrote:when you think about it all the "great" guitarists...bb, freddie, jimmy, jimi, srv van halen etc all played out screaming solos and mostly did new stuff, and by doing this they inspired millions of people to play guitar. compared to them, dave is a beginner at guitar, but its amazing how his relative simply riffs have themselves inspired millions to play. yea i'm slightly insane, i just thought this was pretty cool.
When I was younger I always thought that guitar was such an overused/over-rated instrument I would tell myself "if I ever learn an instrument it's gonna be something different like a picollo". I can say now it's the bestest instrument ever. Sorry for the tangent.

See, there are lots of folks that can play a guitar really well that come and go, however there are instances when someone comes around that has their own style, own voice and their own personality that yields to something more than a singer or a guitarist.
A star.
Dave is a star. He's just got it. He plays his guitar like a drum? People start boards to discuss how to play his songs.
Dave's sick rythym and percussive style coupled with his natural charisma and wit and his songwriting abilities it's clear why there's only one Dave Matthews out there, followed by a trail of imitators.
Peace,
CJT

I was largely inspired to play because of Dave. I wish I would've gotten started on guitar earlier in life, but after being into DMB for a couple years, I decided to pick the guitar up. I always wanted to play their songs, but eventually play my own stuff too. Dave's unique style got me thinking how much more fun guitar could be than the strum, strum, strum stuff. I have fun making my own stuff up on guitar now, and have been told I am a good rythm player. I think part of that might be because I learned how to play a lot of Dave's stuff early on. My roomate has been playing guitar for many more years than me and he can play some lead stuff, but can't play rythm for crap. I think I might have Dave to thank for that

yea very true, the only other band i can think of that cna play stuff as simple as dave would have to be nirvana. but like MWR said, nirvana stuff doesnt rele challange beginners cuz its just open and power chord crap.c_tietze wrote:See, there are lots of folks that can play a guitar really well that come and go, however there are instances when someone comes around that has their own style, own voice and their own personality that yields to something more than a singer or a guitarist.

All the Guitarist mentioned are great. Dave may not be as good as them. However Dave does have some amazing skills/techniques. I have friends who have been playing guitar for years and they can play Led Zepplin tunes Pink floyd tunes and Rush. They watch me play dave tunes and ask how did you do that stretch or how did you mute that and How does Dave sing and play at the same time? If playing like Dave was easy we wouldn't need this chat room.
My dad's friends are like that. They play a lot of 60s/70s rock and CSNY, Beatles, etc. I'll start playing SMTS or something like that and they are impressed.TOMAMI wrote:All the Guitarist mentioned are great. true, playing like dave is real hard, but playing dave's songs and making them your own shouldn't be that hardDmbFanJason wrote:I dont thing Dave's are relatively easy to pick up at all...His are friggin tough...But there are degrees of being able to play these songs IMO...so I guess if you're trying to resemble Dave, it's not that hard, but playing like Dave is frickin tough.
