since dave mutes all the strings except the one he wants to be heard, how come you cant hear the dead sound that you get when you usually mute strings?

It gives the chords that percussive quality, particularly live. On studio albums, that can be edited out. Listen to warehouse live verses warehouse/UTTAD. You can hear all the mutes live but not on the album.
Forget about the reasons and the treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away

i dont think its edited out. its just live, you're playing rougher and less accurately, rather than playing for perfection in a studio.

Tim most of the parts on the first few albums, and he tends to play a little more accurately.

Thats what I have been trying to tell people for the last few weeks! The fact that daves parts are doubled with timmy and then unequally balanced in volume makes them inaudible.

That would be steve lillywhite, but I don't think he deserves to be shot. I think they turned out to be great albums.

I like the songs but their live versions are so much better. Even though I don't like lillywhite, without him they wouldn't be half as far as they are today. He was the one that got them on RCA in the first place and on their way to stardom.

Ok, the reason why Steve turned their guitars down is because he wanted to showcase the band more, not just the vocals and guitar. He wanted people to notice the band as one, instead of a singer/songwriter and a back up band. He wanted people to notice the other instruments, and take them as important as the guitar and vocals. Also, those albums Steve produced where their best albums. I think Everyday, Busted Stuff, and Some Devil are great, and have a fresh new sound, but the master was Lillywhite. If you don't like him, then throw away UTTAD, Crash, and BTCS.

I like the albums, just not the way lillywhite produced them.

I mean I like everything about the albums except for the "turn david down and timmy up" policy. With BTCS it is not as much of a problem as it is with Crash and UTTAD.
