the chet

i'm thinking that my next guitar may be a chet but i would like some input before i try to find one.

*first off, no i don't just want it because dave played it. i know a lot of artists who use it and wanted one long before i was a dmb fan

i'm pretty happy with my guitar for playing around the house and would like a guitar just for the stage.
i have NEVER been able to play one before because no music store around me has them in stock. so i'd really like to know how they stand up to a high-end full bodied acoustic.

what are the upgrades that i keep hearing that dave did to his?

If you want the SST that features the stars on the frets, well good luck. This axe is boku expensive and fairly rare.

Try ebay or a vintage guitar shop that sells used axes.

You will get the jerks that will accuse you a being a Dave wannabee, I say 'eff em. Lol. The guitarist from Guster plays the SST Chet too!

I'm pretty sure his guitar tech completely gutted and redid the electronics in his chets. From what I've heard, they really don't sound much like acoustics at all. They are in between an acoustic and an electric. I think the fact that he threw fishman electronics in and ran it through an EQ, preamp, etc. is the only reason that his sounds somewhat acoustic.

But then again, I've never played one so I shouldn't really talk.

mine has a Fishman Acoustic Matrix Natural 1 pickup in it, and it changed the sound to more acoustic. Cost about $135.00 for purchase and installation. I like mine alot.

Mine is completely stock with a cedar top, and I love it. True, it doesn't sound like a "normal" acoustic, but it's a very cool sound. Everyone in my band thinks it has killer tone.

a friend of mine plays one through a PA weekly and it sounds pretty warm and fuzzy kind of like a regular acoustic guitar. I just can't get used to the thin body so thats why i dont like it.

My friend scoffed when he first saw it, but when i plugged it in, he about shit his pants at how nice it sounded, and this was BEFORE I had the Fishman put in it. Mine's strait black, 1997 Epiphone, too.

Yeah, I should clarify that mine is the Gibson Chet. I play through a PA as well, and it sounds pretty darn cool. I would describe the sound as "acoustic with bite".

First off, the star inlay isnt rare at all. who ever said that. Anyway, I got mine 700 but your looking at 1,500 new at a store. It doesnt sound like a acoustic at all. Nor a electric. It is right in the middle. Doesnt sound like anything else really. good luck

can anyone recomend the epiphone version of it, and there sorta rare, unless ur at a gibson showcase luck is how ull find one. Looked for months finaly found one by accident when i had a whim to go to a guitar store out of town. I think they sound good.

i see chets all the time, there are like 3 of them at my local GC and one at a small shop about a block from here.... I would actually like one just because its a nice mix of electric and acoustic. I never really got into playing an electric but its close enough that soloing is easier and it sounds a lot more electric

I have a epi and it is a good guitar. It isnt the Gibson, but it still is a solid guitar.

I have played a Gibson Chet quite a few times. Through a good amp, it sounds like an acoustic to me. it plays very nicely, a little thinner of a neck for an acoustic, but not as thin as a strat or tele. If I had some money to throw around like that, I would buy one. I can see why Dave liked it. It's a good guitar, and it sounded like an acoustic to me (you just need the proper amp to give it the real sound). I tried the Epiphone one, didn't like it, but I loved the Gibson. It's not great for sitting around the house and playing, but really shows up good on stage.

you can get a really cool sound if you have a electric amp. that is where you get the cool sound.
