Using a pick

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Using a pick will get easier with time, like with most things you just have to get some experience and get used to it and things will start to come to you.

As far as the pick vs no-pick debate, who cares. If you want to use one great if you don't want to use one that's great to. If you want to strum with an f-in nickel have at it. I don't think any method is superior across the board 100% of the time. I like to try and fingerpick most of the songs I try to play just to see how it sounds and also to get my fingers acustommed to the intricacies of fingerpicking. I like to use the pick to see what I can to with the rhythm and get the chunk-a-chunk sound that c_tietze was talking about. Ultimately the technique that is going to work best is going to depend on the sound you are trying to achieve.

Does Tim use a pick? I've only seen him on the D&F tour and he seemed to be fingerpicking the entire time.

I use both but I use a pick for 95% of Dave's songs that I play. I like Dave's style with his right hand and he uses a pick most of the time. Nothing like fingerpicking for some of the old Paul Simon tunes, for instance.

I like playing my 12 string with my fingers, though. Mellows the sound right out. As most of the posters have said...learn as many styles as you can and use them all as often as you like.

I've heard ranting play warehouse without a pick and you'd never be able to tell.. He is exceptionally good without a pick.. talented to say the least

I'm sure he is, that's why i'd like to hear it. I never meant to imply that he couldn't do it, i'm just really interested in hearing what it sounds like. I finger pick alot, but it's usually for more of classical sound.

it would be best to get me by yahoo, msn, or aim to hear me play, I don't have a site to post things yet, I need to get a new one sometime. So, if you want to hear, just IM me.
