is DMB white music?
I've always wondered to see almost only white people in DMB concerts and DMB shows. Almost every DMB fan is white too. So is DMB considered white music? I just don't understand that, cause DMB brings in so many different influences from different cultures and different places. I see them as a symbol to cross all barriers of race. Are we still of such ancient attitude and undeveloped, that we build up walls and seperate music fans in two groups namely in black and white music? We should not forget that music is bringing people together, because music is something we all like. and I support Dave and any musician who is williing to join the anti-war coalition and who's working for cherity and development projects. What do you think???

i dont think theres such a thing as "white music" or "black music" because everyone likes their own things. i have white friends who like rap and theres gotta be some black people who like DMB. to think that some races like music and some dont is wrong simply because its not true..

im jsut playing devils advocate here....shane wrote:i dont think theres such a thing as "white music" or "black music" because everyone likes their own things. i have white friends who like rap and theres gotta be some black people who like DMB. to think that some races like music and some dont is wrong simply because its not true..
but you say that there is no "Black" and "white" music yet you distinguished rap as being "Black" music in what you said - you contradicted yourself.
i don't feel that there are borders that say "you can't listen to this because you are not of this race" BUT it is evident that some music is more popular in different cultures....this is not a bad thing by any means. Just as musical taste varies between age.
It just reflects what people connect to. I don't care what they connect to as long as they connect to someting.
In conclusion I don't agree with labelling music "black" or "white" but you can't deny the popularity within any culture.

no contradiction
shane pointed out that he knows white people who listen to rap and black people who listen to DMB. So there is NO clear border between black and white music and that's what he wanted to say. There is NO contradiction.
cave_cricket, I think you should really think about this case before your gonna throw around strange replies like that any more....

It's funny that this came up on the board. When I was working in the studio the other day (Arch studio) my professor asked what music I was listening to. At the time, I was listening to Ben Folds and I was trying to describe the type of genre he falls under which is difficult to do. Anyways, someone across the room decided to "help me out" and announced that it was "white music". It was an interesting silence that followed until my professor, who is Black, stated that he didn't know music had a color.
Now how is that for a response? I'll be the first person to say that "metaphorically" music has many colors especially in the case of DMB but these colors are more metaphorical of the richness of the sound than a question of race.
Ok maybe that was a bit of a tangent but on the subject of race why do we feel that we need to classify music as Black or White? Do Black people make Black music? Does a certain number of White listeners listening to a certain type of music make it White music? Sure, I'll agree that some races have a tendancy to prefer one type of music over another but to label it as a color is a huge fallacy.
My sister loves Hip Hop, Rap, and Pop music and I don't. We're both white we just have different tastes in music. It's not a matter of color, it's a simple matter of preference. I like to think the DMB is something that's about more than race. It's an integrated band and an integrated sound. Look around at the next concert - it may be predominantly White but you will see ALL walks of life represented as well. It's not just limited to DMB as there are many fine examples that I could list and we could debate all day but it's just something to be said about music that has the ability to transcend the question of race.
It's not about the race. It's about the music.
Peace,
Kevin
(Sorry this was a little long winded but I feel strongly about racial discussions. Racism has always existed and to a certain extent always will but pointless characterization raises issues where issues need not be raised.)

Re: no contradiction
I think you misunderstood me. Shane did say that there is no "black" and "white" music. And I agree with that. I do not feel that music should be labeled at all. Music is just music. Shane then said that he knows white people that listen to rap music. Obviously he associated rap as being "black" music. Why else pick rap? He could have said country, pop, punk, rock and roll, raggae, classical, alternative, jazz, blues...etc. I just wanted to point out that while he said that there is no distinciton he picked one genre and did just that.borocks wrote:shane pointed out that he knows white people who listen to rap and black people who listen to DMB. Like my opening line said...I was just playing devils advocate....just to generate thoughts...nothing intended.
As for my point. All I was saying is that no one can deny that some musical genres are more popular in different cultures. It does not mean it is limited to but is more prominent in. I'm also not saying that it is a bad thing.
Anyway, I'm not here to offend.
Peace, love and good tunes,

what i meant was that a lot of people always think rap = black because of all the black rappers and crap like that. personally i hate rap, pop, classical and some others but i didnt mean for it to be taken that way.

I take every gif I watch (which is A LOT) with a humongous grain of salt. But I don't let that grain of salt get into my eye and blind me to whatever truth can be found in what I'm watching. He is not any worse than any other poster here, and the people who claim he is just don't know what they're talking about. The demonization has gotten ridiculously out of hand.

Actually I didn't feel he was contradicting himself, he was explaining why popular stereotypes are not true. His point was correct.cave_cricket wrote:im jsut playing devils advocate here....shane wrote:i dont think theres such a thing as "white music" or "black music" because everyone likes their own things. i have white friends who like rap and theres gotta be some black people who like DMB. to think that some races like music and some dont is wrong simply because its not true..
