the thing about Mayer is the voice

This is the place to talk about guitar playing not done by Dave! Topics about techniques, styles, theory, and other guitarists go here.

his lyrics aren't alwasy very good but for some reason that song Sucker has some really true statements

Sometimes, I wish that I was a bong hit
You'd take me in and you would love every minute
then tell the room, the things I did to you

Something about that makes me laugh and agree

I'd like him if it wasn't for his damned facial expressions. He hurts to look at when he's singing.
Stay with me, safe and ignorant.

That's kind of a dumb reason not to like someone's music.

His best stuff doesn't make it to MTV/VH1 anyway...

Why should it matter? Dave makes faces while singing and people don't dislike him for that. So do dozens of other singers.
Forget about the reasons and the treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away

Good guitarist. I'm not going to bash on his vocals because I suffer from the same thing, and I diss myself enough as it is. ;)

St. Patrick's Day is probably his only decent song lyrically, and maybe Great Indoors.

I don't think his lyrics will improve, though. It's a conversational style. He can polish it up a bit more but I doubt it'll ever be anything close to Dylan. ;)

I saw it this morning, and the comment I made to my brother was exactly that. I like the song better when someone who actually has a vocal range (brad) above whispering everything (like mayer does). We also detrmined, that after his girl friend said she liked mayers voice, that it must be a girl thing.

In conclution, both my brother and I feel Mayer would be best suited as a lead guitarist and nothing more. His guitar talent would be best with someone who had great vocals. I think his voice takes away from what he is really capable of.

He makes stupid faces when he sings. I can't stand him live but I like his studio stuff.
hahaha, no shit, he was on Conan a few nights ago and I was like wtf is this guy doing with his face... it looked painful.

Exactly, Snyder.

The first thing my friends and I said when we first heard him was "shut up and play."

Both in regards to vocals and lyrics. I still have no idea how he can sing YBIAW without cracking up.

i got no problems with the guy, i like his music and i wish i had the tumbs to play some his crap. its cool to see a pop-ish guy influenced by someone like SRV - i think mayer's new album is great. its not too "pop", i think its more jazzy and mellow. his voice could improve, but it works, and i like his lyrics

Many folks will disagree, but John Mayer is another case of here today, gone today.

He's got a fan base that will grow out of his music soon.

The Jimmy Fallon impersonation of John during SNL's Chrismas Special is priceless.

Blah, blah, blah-blah, blah, Merry Christmas.

My feeling about Mayer is that he's only put out a couple of releases, then his people hyped him, and hyped him and hyped him.

His candy pop was all over the radio, VH1, MTV and then he released a live DVD. Why does the music business feel that an artists deserves to release a live DVD release after releasing only a couple of CD's is beyond me, but that's the biz.

My feeling, is that since John's not been around very long, and honestly he doesn't have a very large catalog of music, why should he be promoted so heavily? The reason is it's his people, slaves to the music business trying to find their next money maker in the niche that Dave Matthews created, sorry, but it's true.

I will admit that John might be straying from the acoustic on his most recent recording, but in the early days (i.e. two years ago, LOL) he was writing Dave Matthews-like acoustic songs to gain popularity and attain radio play.

Of course, I try to keep an open mind about music in general. However it kind of baffles me how John Mayer is on the cover of guitar magazines giving these in depth interviews about his career, and his music, yet he's only been in the "spotlight" for a few short years? It's kind of like, "hey, why are YOU giving all of these interviews and rambling all the time about yourself when you're not really as big as a star as your A&R department would have us believe?"

Peace,

CJT
