I think Mayer is a great guitar player and his riffs are good. I just can't stand his voice. I watched a video of him and Brad Paisley doing Why Georgia and Brad sang most of it and the song was a ton better. If you like either of these guys try to find them on Crossroads on CMT and the video is on the website.

He has trouble coming up with engaging lyrical hooks to give feeling to his songs. His music sounds good but his placing of the lyrics sounds amateur, kinda like me when I first began writing. Let me give Comfortable as an example. Gorgeous music, but its as if he wrote the lyrics two hours before he recorded the song.
Forget about the reasons and the treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away

Comfortable isn't a fair example, that's one of his first songs. I agree the music doesn't completely fit the way he sings it, still a good tune though.Davy28 wrote:He has trouble coming up with engaging lyrical hooks to give feeling to his songs. Mayer knows he isn't that great of a singer. He said he considers himself a guitar player...he just doesn't want anyone else to sing his songs.
I think his guitar playing & songwriting will improve over the years; but his singing will probably stay the same.
