Guitar and singing
This may sound weird, but i just now, like 5 min ago learned how to sing and play guitar at the same time. Is there anyway to hone that skill, besides the obvious practicing?

yeah, usually when im playin a CD and not playing guitar with it, ill sing, thats how ive gotten to be able to carry a note. And i talk when need be when playing but i usually try to answer it with a yes or no nod. Ill work on what you guys are sayin, i think itll help allot.
Its ironic, cause i was listenin to L@LC, Tripping Billies, and I was playing along with it to make sure i had th timing right, and then around halfway thru the song i realized i was singing the whole song, thought that was pretty cool.

Whenever I do that, I always have to talk with the beat. I can't talk and play independantly.
Forget about the reasons and the treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away

well I am learning how to play the guitar - so I fumble around a bit, however I have been singing since I was a little kid.
My concentration lays on my fingers rather than my voice but something that I found really freeing was to play guitar and sing oh's and ah's or whatever comes naturally. This allows you to mess and find new melodies without the burden of words (or trying to remember them for that matter).
I agree though learning the lyrics backwards and forwards is really good, but I find this strategy worked really well for me. Sometimes I just sing and whatever falls out, falls out. I found some really interesting lyrics this way as well.
good luck.
be sure to deep breath into your diaphragm, merely just passing through your lungs and filling your stomach and lower back. This will help you in the long run and you can begin from a real good foundation.
cheers!

Short answer no, long answer maybe.filmdude100cms wrote:This may sound weird, but i just now, like 5 min ago learned how to sing and play guitar at the same time. Is there anyway to hone that skill, besides the obvious practicing?
Practice is the key. It also helps to know a song extremely well, by heart even. If you can memorize a song and the ryhthm of it, playing along and singing are much, much easier.
Playing any instrument, especially guitar is rewarding during those moments when one "gets it" and things start to click, i.e. you can keep a ryhthm, make a chord change, pick properly, sing and play together, etc.
Keep playing, don't give up.

Congratulations! Great feeling, isn't it? Based on one of your later posts, I think you have the secret...you were singing along to Billies without realizing you were doing it. Do that all the time (practice). Hell, if you can do it with Triping Billies you can play and sing anything anyone ever wrote.filmdude100cms wrote:This may sound weird, but i just now, like 5 min ago learned how to sing and play guitar at the same time. I think the key is to remember that the guitar part and the vocal part are separate (D'uh). There is a subtle difference between playing and singing at the same time and accompanying yourself. You have it.
Have fun.
