differences between taylor 010 and 014

Unread post by Jay » Sat Mar 08, 2003 9:01 pm

ok, so my acoustic guitat is slowly dying, and i have to replace it, and i figure i might as well replace it with something nice...anyway...i dont really know much about wood and shapes and things, so i figured you guys could help.

i read that the dreadnaught shapes are more suited to heavier strumming than the grand auditoriums are, but then...dave plays a 14, and he seems like a pretty heavy strummer....i dont know.

i just spent about 2 hours playing a 614ce at sam ash, and i actually made friends with one of the guys that worked there and taught him a song.

i really like the shape of the 14's, and the sound also....what is so drastically different about them?

i'm in love with the 614ce, just not its price tag

first off i would just like to say im not a big fan of the taylor 600 series.
that said:
The Dreadnought is the classic body shape that's instantly recognizable. It produces a deep bass, and good volume. This body style suits many different types of music and playing styles. It's really good for strumming and flatpicking, however, I personally find it too bass-heavy for fingerstyle guitar playing. The Dreadnought is a favorite among bluegrass players, especially.

The Grand Auditorium has the body depth of a Dreadnought, but a narrower waist. This makes it somewhat easier to hold and play for most players. It's also a very visually appealing body style. The body style and bracing pattern give this guitar extra top-end sparkle, while retaining much of the bass-end of the Dreadnought. This guitar is a very good "swiss army knife" guitar, and is favored by many players and many styles, including fingerstyle players. The x14 is Taylor's most popular body style.

DREADNOUGHT The original Dreadnought acoustic guitar appeared early in the 20th Century, and its no-frills, no-nonsense shape made it a logical namesake of the huge battleships of that day. Most subsequent Dreadnoughts, including Taylor's have been derivative of that early design. In 1997, however, Bob Taylor re-designed the Taylor Dreadnought by softening the curves at the top and bottom and generally refining its overall shape. It retains the volume and pronounced bass response for which this size is famous, while delivering clear trebles and an airy mid-range. Dreadnought six-strings have more bracing mass, so they shine as "plectrum" or "rhythm" guitars, because they respond well to flatpicking or light-to-heavy strumming.
GRAND AUDITORIUM It makes sense that the Grand Auditorium has become our most popular size: while our other three body styles represent variations on existing model types, the GA was the first guitar shape designed from scratch by Bob Taylor. It was finished in time to commemorate the company's 20th Anniversary in 1994, and since then it has more than lived up to its promise. Although the GA has the width and depth of a Dreadnought, its narrower waist gives it the appearance of a smaller instrument, adds treble "zing" across the guitar's tonal spectrum, sharpens the definition of individual notes, and also enables it to rest comfortably in the lap. Because we remove mass from the width of the GA's braces, the guitar top moves faster, resulting in a snappy, bell-like tone. The GA is designed to be a strong fingerpicking guitar that also can handle medium strumming.
i know its a lot of reading, but i think itll help

there's really nothing drastically different between the sound of the Dread and the Auditorium, especially in Taylors. anway, the auditorium is a better plugged in because the body isn't as deep as the dread and cuts back a bit on feedback and probably sounds bigger plugged in then the dread. but for playing unplugged the dread might have a bit more balls if ya know what I mean. louder, more bass but not necessarily better sounding than the auditorium. I don't have much experience with Taylors but that's my overall impression for what it's worth.
good, and you?

i read all that stuff from the taylor site already....but when i play them, they dont sound THAT different...and i like the shape of the auditorium a whole lot more than the other one.

why aren't you a fan of the 600 series?

supposing it's the highest one i can afford, why is it not better than the 300, 400, or 500? i like it a lot more than the 300 and the 400, the looks and the sounds. they only had a 512 at the store, so i didnt play the 500.

i like how the 600 looks, it plays way better than my roommates' 310 which i didnt think was possible, and i am a sucker for those leaf inlays...

a stretch on my memory... i know the 614 was maple with a spruce top.

i think the 510 ltd was mahogany, spruce top. my LP is made of mahogany and i like that. if they made the 510 ltd as a 514 it'd be perfect.

Additional specifications are the same as a standard 510 and can be viewed by clicking here and choosing the corresponding model.
