It refers to a man named Chris Hani. I believe he was some politician or rights activist who was assassinated. Not sure though, someone here probably knows.

I don't know about that, but they wrote #36 to celebrate his life. It turned out to be too happy for a memorial song (like cry freedom) so they changed hani to honey.
Forget about the reasons and the treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away

Dave wrote it shortly after Chris Hani was murdered in Africa.. it's a song to commemorate all their times together

Code: Select all

Song Number: <— 36 —>
Available on:
—Live at Red Rocks
—Listener Supported (CD)
—Listener Supported (DVD/VHS)
—Live at Folsom Field, Boulder, Colorado (CD)
—Live at Folsom Field, Boulder, Colorado (DVD/VHS)
First Played: 18 April 1993
Songwriters: David J. Matthews
This song is the second numbered song by the band, however, was not the first numbered song to have words ("#34" originally had lyrics).

This song, released for the first time on the Live At Red Rocks album, is about a friend of Dave Matthews', Chris Hani, who died fighting apartheid in his native country, South Africa. The original lyrics were "Hani, Hani, come and dance with me" but, have since been changed to "Honey, honey, come and dance with me." Dave thought the change was necessary because the song has an upbeat tempo to it and felt that a song about death shouldn't be so happy.

On the Summer 2001 Tour, the band began playing this song as a medley with "Everyday." This was done because the melody line from this song was lifted and used for the title-track from Everyday. This rendition of the song can be heard on Live at Folsom Field, Boulder, Colorado.

Is it his autobiography?
