My Alvarez story...

Unread post by sjakubek » Fri Mar 07, 2003 3:27 pm

To make a long story not so long...I put in a order with a local alvarez dealer last wednesday for an AD60SC. The guy said it would take about a week, so holding my patience the best i could, i called up today and asked what was going on. He said that it should have been in by now and that he'd make a call to the company (i'm assuming in St. Louis). He called me right back and said that his entire order had been back-ordered, and would probably take a COUPLE MONTHS to come in. The alvarez guy told him that they just got a huge shipment in (from Korea i guess??) and had to send everything back because they weren't happy with the quality of the guitars! What is that about!??! It doesn't leave me with a particularly good feeling about Alvarez guitars, but i guess it says something about the standards the company in St. Louis has with their inspections. So i guess it's more shopping for me, and i'll probably end up spending 3x what i wanted to spend to get a Taylor or something!! Just thought i'd share....later guys.

Yeah, save up and get a nice 310CE or D-16RGT or somethin like that. I would definitely not buy an Alvarez after that little incident. You know you don't have to worry about that happening with Taylor or Martin.

Dude, you get what you pay for with guitars. I would NEVER buy a guitar that came from Korea. The only asian country I might consider would be Japan, but thats it. Consider this delay a blessing. Trust me.

Side note - Taylors are great, but if you do a lot of solo playing, or playing without a drumset at least, go with a martin. More bass, fuller sound solo. (Just a humble opinion, not trying to start a debate.)

mb, i won't respond to your taylor bash :) but will say something about alvarez's. they really are GREAT guitars, and not buying them because they come from korea is just silly. i have played some phenomenal alvarez's, my first guitar was a beautiful yairi alvarez that i really miss.

i've always heard and experienced great things with alvarez, and i have great faith in the quality of their product.

Meh. I wouldnt say its silly tico. Why do you suppose they make their guitars in Korea instead of, oh, anywhere else? Its not for skill my friend. Cheap labor. Bottom line. I know Alvarez makes some decent stuff, but thats enough to steer me towards a different brand.

Oh, and as far as the Taylor/Martin thing, I believe we're of the same shcool of thought. If I recall, you have a cedar top taylor (read: bassier) and I would be totally down with what you've got over most martins. :)

Alavrez's Yari's are made in Japan. Don't know if the non-yaris are made in Korea. I own a Yari (have the WY-1 Bob Weir model). I love it. I chose to buy it. I could've bought a Martin or Taylor at the time and chose not to. I've had no quality issues with my guitar. Not to say that i know that this happens to every company, but i'm sure other guitar companies have issues now and then with QC. It actually shows that Alavrez is a great company for not trying to put crappy product on the shelf. Not to mention we don't even know if the guy sjakubek talked to was telling the truth. Who knows maybe the was lazy and never order the guitar and just made up an excuse. Do you think it's wise to discredit a company based upon a post in a forum, on the Internet, from one consumer that didn't even buy, play, or see the product

Hey I'm not discrediting a company based on his post. I'm not even discrediting their Japanese made guitars. Bottom line is they go to Korea for cheap(er) labor, and regardless of how much people like one, thats just one little thing for me personally that doesnt fly when there are a dozen other companies that dont go that go that route. Dont think I had a revelation due to this guy's post and am suddently boycotting all Alvarez guitars or something.

yeah i hear that man. didn't mean for my response to come off sounding cocky or rude. I'm not down with the slave labor either. I'm curious how do we know that their guitars are made in korea. The Alvarez sites says Japan. My guitar also says Japan. sjakubek said "The alvarez guy told him that they just got a huge shipment in (from Korea i guess??) and had to send everything back because they weren't happy with the quality of the guitars!"

damn guys you don't have to start quoting every little thing i said. I'm not an expert on alvarez guitars, or any other kind for that matter, but I THOUGHT they were made in korea (the non yairis that is). As for the guy at the store, he's not jerking me around. I've dealt with him a lot and he will get me the guitar as soon as he can. Why would he not want to sell a guitar from his store?????

no offence intended. I really just didn't know. I would assume the guy wants to sell you a guitar. I only said that thing about the guy being lazy, cause i think i've done something similar before when i had to work in a retail store and order some smack for someone  Really i hope you get a great guitar no matter what brand. A great guitar is like a second girl friend.
