song key
Hey ya'll, I was wondering what exactly a song's key is. I would like to know how to find it and the benefits of finding the key. Does it help with moving from creating a verse to the chorus and help it sound somewhat connected? and the same for a bridge? Please help out with this, thanks!

the song key depends on all the chords in the song. the key pretty much tells you what chords/notes will sound good when played with other chords in the key. i myself dont know how to find them, but i hope to learn.

Traditionally a key is used to simplify the notation of a piece, as at the begining you would be told which notes are altered, which means you havent got bars full of accidentals. This becomes very useful if you have music in keys like C sharp major.
The key also gives you a rough guide to solo over, you can make a solo fit the song well and feel right by playing in the key, or by playing outside the key, you can give more feeling to the solo. (listen to some charlie parker).
Keys can help decide what chords you use, eg, you can decide to use a I V II IV chord progression in whatever key, but this kinda limites you abit. Dunno if this answers your question well.

yeah describing a songs key (tonality) can be tricky...but i think even if you have little knowledge of music or theory you can still find it. The absolute most simple way is to listen to the song, and hum to yourself until you find the note that basically "sounds right" throughout the entire thing. You might not find it right away but once you do you will know it. For example, try listening to Ants Marching, the Stone, and LIOG...they are all in the key of D, thus for the most part, if you're humming a "d" it fits. And without getting into any big theory thing...it's because most notes in a scale want to lead to the tonic note, or if you know your do-re-mi's...the DOOOOOO.
