
The worst thing that you can do is to apply uneven stress on the neck for a long period of time or subject the guitar to drastic swings in temperature and humidity. Short of those, not much is going to hurt it.
Check out Dan Erlewine's books on how to set up and maintain your own guitars. It will save you a bunch of cash in the long run and you wont have to wait while it's at the shop anymore. I'm a mod on the lespaulforum (http://www.lespaulforum.org). Dan actually has a little section over there for Q+A on guitar maintenance. Run a search on that section and you'll get a ton of great info on both acoustic and electric setup/maintenance/repair.
