Is minarets frequently covered? i've never heard a cover of it.
have there been covers on it here. IMO it is a seldom covered song.
but i think to be fair we should put it to a vote. i dont' want to do a frequently done song either, but i thought that by suggesting minarets i was suggesting a song that allowed for a lot of creativity
Well I also meant like a song that isn't normally done by Dave and Tim. Something that requires people to think, and be creative with how they appraoch the song. This will give each entry it's own flavor. I don't think minarets is really a song like that, but that's just my opinion.

I really did enjoy the covers a lot. The musicianship was top notch but I will say without hesitation that the creativity was lacking.

I respect the direction that Kanter took with this site but I must say it doesn't encourage creativity. IMO a good cover should have enough of a spin on it that it's not instantly recognizable.
I never said tabbing something out note for note was creative. I said tabbing something out note for note doesn't mean you lack creativity. And doesn't writing your own jam kind of defeat the purpose of the "Jimi Thing Cover Contest"?
There would still be a verse, chorus and bridge. Thats plenty of content to cover.
I don't think I implied that any of you were not creative just that the act in it of itself lacks a lot of creativity. I guess originality would have been a better word.
I think we just have different views, no one is write or wrong.

Well, now that I finally have sound back on my computer :-D I listened to these, and I have to say that all three of you did a hell of a job, it's early in the morning and I would critique how well I thought you guys really did on a deeper level, but I'll see what I can think up when I listen to them again, which I will ;-) But after listening to all of them, my vote goes to Ritz. I was blow away by the solos, and that's what really got me. This is one of the few songs that you don't really need lyrics with, and you filled the no lyrics gap very well! I'm always amazed at what you post, so that's where my vote went. Can't wait to see what is going to happen next time around :-D

If I had to rank them, and I hate doing that because you three had the balls to do it, it would be like this:

Rhythm Guitar - DMBGuitar; very clean and accurate as a cover

Lead - Ritz Bitz - I think you've got rhythm down G, you should work on lead now. You kinda get out of sync a bit.

Singing - Graves ... Mad props for singing, dude. MAD props :)

What I'd like to hear is DMBG and Ritz do a cover of Jimi Thing together where DMBG does the rhythm and Ritz the lead :)

Overall, I liked DMBG's version the best only because it sounded most like the original (as a cover) and the lead doesn't detract from the rest of the playing so not being as good at it as RB doesn't really matter.

For me, the two instrumentals tied for the best. I really enjoyed the lead on both. Also, I think the next cover should be Minarets.

Well, I finally had time to listen to all of them here's what I thought

dmbguitar: was a solid cover, but needed more variation in the second guitar

ritzbitz: another solid cover, I liked the second guitar track made for alot of variation. Also, I think your rythym track was the best.

graves: I liked the fact that you added vocals. Your guitar was also solid but the solos were kind of cut and dry for the most part. Some of the vocals needed a little work in my opinion. You had a few key problems especially in the chorus

All this being said, I think I would have to go with ritzbitz's version. If dmbguitar added more variation and graves tightened the vocals a bit they would all be really awesome stuff. I'm interested to hear the next contest. Mad props to all who entered this one.
I'll play it first and tell you what it is later.
