Rosewood vs. Maple

Unread post by djs488 » Mon Mar 03, 2003 9:49 pm

Forgive me if this has been argued many times before, but I did search the forums. Anyway, is one better than the other? I personally think maple looks better, but is one better than the other?

personally i think maple is ugly. i have no clue what the sides/back of my hofner are made of, but i know the neck is rosewood, same with my godin. i love the feel of rosewood, not to mention the darker the wood the more bassy the sound... i wouldnt take maple over rosewood anyday... unless i got paid to.

it's all preference of sound

i haven't played many guitars with maple, but i did play one that was maple back/sides with sitka top and it was a bit less bassy and more "in your face" projection then the rosewoods i've played.

but all in all go play em and see what u think about the sound

for its sound, most people prefer Rosewood over Maple, and I think more people prefer Mahogany over Maple. I've seen looking flaming maple guitars but I love the dark look of the rosewood. East Indian Rosewood is more popular but Brazilian Roswood is considered better sounding and nicer looking but more expensive because its very rare these days. there are not many good rosewood trees left!!!.
good, and you?

not considering price, theres 1 series in taylors that i wouldnt buy. thats the 600 series where the back/sides/top are all maple. not only does it look ugly to me, but i bet it doesnt sound too great.

maple v rose

i've got a guild D30 (which they recently discontinued i believe???) well, point is it has a spruce top with maple sides and back. read some reviews on it and you don't have to believe me that this guitar is bold, sustains, and has a great tone balance. This is probably due in part to the fact that the back piece is much thicker and has no bracing...but at any rate to completely discount maple in general would be a crime. Every guitar is different and should be judged accordingly-even of the same make and model you will find slight differences. When looking for a guitar-if you go with what you like, aside from appearance the wood shouldn't matter.

All I know is Ive played a Taylor 310ceLtd and it has Maple back and sides and it is the most beatiful guitar Ive ever played and Ive played a lot a Taylors and Martins at the local guitar shop. As soon as I get up $1100 I am going to buy it. If you get a chance to play one (remember its the 310cd limited edition) check it out, you wont be let down, the maple is beautiful and sounds great, IMO.

i *believe* quilted maple is the way to go. if you can find it, i think it's a much better wood... a bit more rare... just as quilted mahogany is super rare, but sounds better then east indian rosewood, and more bassy the brazilian rosewood.

anyone heard much about coral rosewood? i been checking out some high end alvarez... with funky woods..

I doubt it sounds better than east indian rosewood. well maybe in your opinion but its very subjective and it depends on how the guitar is built and by whom it was built and how good the wood is.
good, and you?

quilted maple is nice looking and all, but i think it lacks not only the beauty of rosewood but the bass..

I have a limited edition Epiphone Les Paul Classic Quilt Top, that is a transparent blue. I know you are probably talking about acoustic guitars, but this electric looks amazing. They don't sell them on the web, so I can't find a picture of it. Its list price is $999 and I got it on sale for $399!!! Sweet deal and sweet guitar.

i dont like the pickups.. and theyre nice looking when youre far away from them, but then you get up close and theyre ugly... that goes for all ive seen. i know im not a major authority on epiphones but ive never been satisfied with one.
