Bridge coming off of acoustic guitar......

Unread post by Jay » Mon Mar 03, 2003 8:20 pm

:(

the bridge on my acoustic is starting to pull away from the body of the guitar. you can slide a paper into the crack now, and i think a pick will fit in there soon.....

:(

what is causing this, and how do i fix it or slow it down, and most importantly, is it gonna be expensive?

i use elixer .12 nanowebs, and it's pretty much all i've ever used...

i'm wondering, would it be safe to change the strings on this thing still? the strings are about 6 weeks old and sound like crap...but i dont know if newer ones will have more tension or something...

i cant really get it looked at for a while...

HUMIDITY!!!!! Make sure its not too humid, but too dry can cause this as well. Also look to see if the whole top is swelling with the bridge or if its just the bridge.

read this and it might help you, but other then string tension and misuse of the guitar i'd have to say humidity

actually the top of the body, i can feel a little bulge around the bridge......but the bridge is definitely seperated from the top of the guitar...

i dont understand how it would be string tension, i use 12's and it's always tuned to E or a half step lower...or does this just happen with time? the guitar is about 5 years old...

it's right here: http://homepages.nyu.edu/~jjg243/shesays.jpg

To begin, what kind of guitar is it? How old? I do not think that was mentioned. A number of things can cause this to occur. Humidy and heat can cause this problem. Especially heat because it will loosin the glue holding the bridge on. To much tension or overtuning your guitar frequently can also cause this to happen. Craftmenship could be other possibliy depending on the make of the guitar. If its from a reputable company find out any warranty info.

Have it fixed by the manufacutuer if its a good guitar or by a certified person. I dont think there is a way to "slow it down." I would not restring either unless it is a second-hand guitar.

thanks :)

the manufacturer is Art + Lutherie...it was originally my mom's, but i relieved her of it. it sounds nice too, i hope it doesn't die.

i was worried about the humidity in the winter and i humidified it in december and january....that site says that low humidity will cause the bridge to life...i guess it didn't do a good enough job...

lol i "relieved" my moms guitar of her too - look at the hofner on the website in my signature. art + lutherie is made by lasido right? my godin is from the same company.

i took it to get looked at, the guy was really honest with me and said it's not worth fixing because it would cost so much.

"play it till it dies," he said.

sigh...i just went guitar shopping last month!
