nah, that's not it. little mikey carson lived from 67 to 75 and rode his bike like the devil til the day he died, and he wanted to be "Mister Vertigo" on the flying trapeze when he grew up. and then 1940 to 1992 was just kind of thrown in there..i'm sure it has some meaning, but i don't think you can find out who it was in the song.

i wanna find out who it was now though.

Its gotta be Mr. Vertigo's lifespan. what else could it be?

it's 1940-1992 and it is mr. vertigo

dave said in an interview that all of the names and dates were made up and don't represent people in his real life. mr. verigo was just a name he took from a favorite children's book of his.

It's "1940 to 1990" then he says who he is directing the chorus to
"too Gravedigger, when you dig my...."

He combines them but really it is "1990tooooo gravedigger"

I think he is being ironic about the Trapeze artist who is in constant danger outliving Mikey Carson who was a just a boy on his bike, my two cents

Nope, hate to break yah here, but i thought the same thing, but he just extends the date a little while. It is 1940-1992. It doesn't actually make any sense with it as 1940-1990, to gravedigger.

1940-1990...
to gravedigger when you dig my grave..."

that doesn't make any sense :?

he just streaches out the two, if you listen to a few different versions sometimes he is more clear on it.

Wow, I can't believe how many people are confused by this. I always thought Mr. Vertigo was 1940-1992. What the hell else would that mean? (sorry, that sounded prickish) It just makse more sense that it's Mr. Vertigo.

For what it's worth, that's always been my favorite part of the song. Talking about a kid that died at an early age? Man, that gets to me. I lost a close friend when I was little. Pretty hard to comprehend loss like that when you're so young. Anyway, I also thought the verse about how Mariam Stonewall lost her kids in WWII was pretty heartwrenching.

Like I said, that song is too damn depressing, but not in the way songs like Cry Freedom and Baby. It is more of a dreamed i killed god kind of depressing.
