General Guitar Discussion is where you want this
But I don't have a clue who is.

Greatest living guitarist....I don't believe in such a thing. An interesting question though. What would make such a guy the greatest anyway? If you wanna go with pure shredding speed it'd be someone like Yngwei Malmstein (sp?) or Tim Reynolds. If you wanted to contest who's the most revolutionary guitarist it might be Hendrix. Seriously, I'm not bashing your thread, but you can't rate such a thing.
My favorite guitarist though, is Jimmy Page. What a guy

This is far too much of an emotive subject. Greatest ever guitarist? What style? Acoustic, electric? Everyone has their favourites and it is all personal taste.
I could give you a list of maybe 20 or more guitarists that I personally like to listen to, with 4 or 5 that I would like to be able to play like. But putting them in any particular order is not possible. So to get things going, here are a few of my favourites.
Dave Matthews (had to be considering the forum)
John Mayer (sorry, I happen to like his earlier stuff
)
Larry Carlton
Tommy Emmanuel
Martin Simpson
Kaki King
Ani DiFranco
Claude Bourbon
Eric Clapton
Michael Hedges
Pierre Bensusan
Allan Holdsworth
Earl Klugh
Santana
Martin Taylor
Me!
See. How could you really put them in any order (appart from the last one being last!!). Add into this the likes of Django R and Segovia etc and you can see why no one person can EVER be classified as the best ever. Many have tried, but no one will ever agree. People will say "but what about him / her" or "you forgot so and so", hence why it is an impossible task.

umm, hendrix and michael hedges are not anywhere close to being the greatest living guitarists, since theyre both dead....
the guitarists that im the most impressed/moved by that i listen to are Leo Kottke, Tommy Emmanuel and Tim Reynolds- I know there are about a million people out there that are just as good but i just havent heard them

My top four...
tim reynolds, leo kottke, jimmy page, steve howe
i would say hendrix, but alas, he is still dead. so i must choose clapton as the best. in terms of song construction i would not give him an inch, maybe even give that to mr. dave himself, however, the solos churned out by this machine are absolutely amazing, which i believe eclipse that of hendrix and page. nils lofgren is also an underrated guitarist who i believe has more shredding power than malmsteen and certainly timmy.
