Mike, I really hope you don't take it as me saying that he shouldn't listen to you because "you" aren't as good as him. I'm not saying that at all, as I respect you as a musician and what you can do already with your instrument :D I was making a general statement. There is not enough true knowledge and experience on these boards for people to go around telling(more like commanding) others what to do with their voice.

In my honest opinion, if this guy hadn't come out and posted one of his first threads "I want to sing exactly like Dave!" that no one would say one thing about him copying Dave.
but jason...even though I, or as you say, people in general, am/are not as good as him at singing, i stiill believe i can give him my opinion. he doesn't have to take it, i'm just saying what i think. does that mean if i suck at playing a certain song, but the person has obviously played something wrong on his guitar, i can't say because i suck at it? (that was al ittle exaggurated, but you get the idea.)

whatever, i just happen to think his voice sounds like dave, whether he's trying to or not. eitehr way it sounds good, and it was a great cover.

done, and done. :)

I totally get what you meant by the voice cracking thing he tries to do to sound like Dave, don't feel alone on it ;) Also I think tone wise his voice is higher so he'd be better suited to sing a song straight like James Taylor if he's gonna sound like anyone.

I listened to all yours songs, and liked them. I'm writing my comments before I read everyone elses, so if I'm repeating someone, I apologize.

I've been writing music for a long time, and one thing I realized is that if you're going for a particular sound, you'll never be satisfied. Don't think, "I'm going to write folk-rock like Dave," or anything along those lines. Just put some riffs together, sit down and write, and let it come out.

Also, listen to everything you can get your hands on, and make sure you learn to play more than just Dave songs. Definitely delve into other bands and explore there styles as well. Mix it all in a melting pot, see what happens.

Oh, and I like your voice. Let it be what it is.

A friend and I covered Dave's "Crash" at a talent show and got pretty good reviews. If you're ever performing, you should stick in the old verse that comes during the end jam, "You be my dixie chick/I'll be your Tennessee lamb/we'll go walking down in dixie land/swimming in your ocean, swimming in your sea/crash into me."
Stay with me, safe and ignorant.
