Do you think being a perfectionist......

is a driving force to make you play good?

Perfection

Unread post by riffduster01 » Sun Apr 04, 2004 7:17 pm

Today at church I had to play a song that they showed me 20 minutes before it had to be played. I got alot of complements on it, but being the perfectionist that i am, i still think that it sounded like crap.

I was just wondering if anyone else is plauged with this same problem?

also asking for your thoughts on weather being a perfectionist is a bonus or a bummer.

being a perfectionist is cool and all, but sometimes you lose focus on why you're playing in the first place, and that should be too have fun.

yeah, this girl wanted me to learn a song for her and i did, but then she wanted me to play it right away, and i only learned it like 20 minutes ago. she said it was good, but i was way too hard on myself, i dont' like to perform a song unless i have it down awesomely sick

Truthfully, I am never really happy with my playing in music. Pisses me of to the highest extent after I play for my school. I am like "You need to sound like this guys, but your sounding like shit. What the fuck?" Guitar I am just fucked up. I guess I am a perfectionist to the highest extent. I have a lot of concerts at school and my mom is all "You were awsome" and I am like "What are you talking about, were you in the same room as me? I sucked ass. Did you hear that one part...." Then I go off and my Mom just starts to kid like she knows what I mean. During the playing I ususally just laugh but after I can live with myself. Dont get me wrong, I love music. Favorite thing in the world. I just want to do the great music out there some justice. Unfortunatly I am a pathetic excuse for a guitar player and singer....as well as a drummer. Drummer most definitly.

If your playing Dave I assure you your better than most out there. I know people who have played for years and they're happy down at the first fret playing simple chords. I think everyone around here should give themselves more credit.
I'm a perfectionist when it comes to recording though. I have to be in the right frame of mind which doesn't come around very often. It's very annoying.

When I play, I feel every fuck up that im doing and I think it sounds like shit. I'm never happy with what im playing, but whenever i show it to my guitar teacher he's always impressed, saying "your the quickest learn I've ever taught" when I can't do jackshit compared to many other guitarists. It's hard, but I feel that everyone is a perfectionist when it comes to music. Partially because there's no end to it. With drawing, or writing, you feel as if everything has to be perfect, and then once it's done, its done. the paper is written and you can't do anything else, or the drawing is inked and finished. But with music, its a journey. Your always working on the same project, and it'll never be done. .... anyhoo.... I kinda got off on a rant there... phhhew... im gonna go make a pizza. :P

I really think it's a good thing to be a perfectionist when it comes to music. I mean, when you're performing, there's a point where you've gotta just let go of your mistakes and move on, but being a perfectionist makes you push yourself not to make those mistakes. As long as you don't let it suck the fun out of music, I'd say it's good.

I am attempting to record #41 for you guys and let me tell, never been more stressed out. I want the very best, and even the very best can be better.
