tuners on my martin

Unread post by somedevil8 » Wed Mar 24, 2004 2:31 pm

so last night i changed my strings and noticed the guitar wouldn't stay in tune for long recently. Tightened the screws on the sides of the tuners, and it seems the problem is solved. Will tightening thos screws hurt my tuners?

that's not your problem. after you change your strings you have to tighten up your STRINGS. the way to do this, is tune it with a tuner or whatever, then yank on each string. you can be aggressive. pull hard. but don't kill yourself. do that for each string, then retune, and repeat several time. SEVERAL.

ONCE WILL NOT DO THE TRICK. people need to know this....many times is the key. patience.....

I find doing this, then playing for a good half hour, then pulling on them more and retuning works well

That's an amazing "trick" to keep a guitar in tune. Works amazingly

Yeah I do this as well and I seldomly have to tune my guitar. Works like a charm.

Perhaps the amount of time the strings were given to stretch while he tightened the tuners? I dunno. I guess its possible (though unlikely) that the tuners were NOT tight and were slipping, therefore not holding tune... i doubt it though, i havent seen that before though im sure its possible

It is not the tuners. It is that the strings stretch and come out of tune as you play then you have to tune up again. By stretching them when you put them on then you are like getting that out of the way so you won't have to tune up all the time in the future.

Yea with every new set of strings you just have to play hard for a good while the day you put them on to really get them in tune. No need to mess with the screws on the tuners, its just the strings. :D

im so paranoid when i get to the G, i broke it like the 3rd time i ever strung a guitar, and now i'm always afraid im going to break it... just pull the strings about an inch and a half or so off the fretboard, while holding the string down at the nut. Hold it in position for like ten seconds, then tune back up to pitch. Repeat until when you pull it the string stays in tune or close.

yea the first time a string broke it scared me shitless! my buddies mom had her cornea scratched when one broke off and hit her in the eye. true story.

i just always tune my guitar sharp and i dont seem to have any problems.

Guess I've been lucky. I have a Yahamaha FG-340.. It's about 30 years old. The only time I really have to tune it is the day after I put new strings on(it's usually not out very far), and if I bump the tuning post. Yes, I have a good ear. At one time (about 10 years ago) I was very close to having perfect pitch. The Marine Corps changed that since I wasn't playing all the time. Of course, I check everytime I pick it up, and will tune if something goes out while I'm playing. I've had Martin Light's and John Pearse Mediums on it so far.

My strings stay in tune after about under 30 minutes of playing, and it's fine.
