Practice it slow. Just keep a finger or fingers on the strings as you move your hand up to do the slide. I don't think there is any right way to do it. It's personal preference. You may find that you need to keep more than just your index finger on the strings. Slow it down to the point where you can do it and build up from there. I know how you feel. Six months ago that frustrated the shit out of me too.

I do play lots of things, and rarely play Dave. I don't play much Dave because I am just starting out and I know it's above my level. I can play Dave half-assed but if I'm gonna play it, I want it to have that percussive bassy sound to it....So I will wait until I am the guitar god before I start really playing Dave.

Someone shoot me the definition of palm muting. Because what I think it is, is really easy and I can't understand why people can't do it. I mean, isn't it self-explanatory, you mute with your palm.

Palm muting is easy for me when I'm just goofin around but if I have to incorporate it into a song at full speed, then it gets all ganked up ...
Finger/Fret/whatever muting is waaaaaay beyond me right now.
I'm trying to learn a couple different parts of songs like Nancies and Billies(and Warehouse all the way through) and I just cannot get it to sound anywhere close to being right yet.
Eventually I'll get it, but right now I'm just trying to figure technique out.

i rest the "ball" of my hand, if you will - the part of my palm closest to my wrist - across the strings, and play normally. and it sounds muted. its one of those things where i cant help you if you cant do it, it seems too easy.

He is not any worse than any other poster here, and the people who claim he is just don't know what they're talking about. The demonization has gotten ridiculously out of hand.

I don't see how you can palm mute in this song. I do it for Gravedigger and some other bluesy stuff that I play. It's just a lot easier to mute with your fretting hand in an uptempo song like this. I can't imagine slapping my palm on the strings when your strumming fast like that. Again, I guess it's personal prefernce.

are you kidding? i really hope so..Humble Monkey wrote:I've noticed a lot of Dave-driven guitarists can't palm mute........for those of you who are having trouble palm muting; try learning something besides Dave Matthews! --jk It's kinda true though.
If you're implying that dave doesn't use any palm muting then you need to think again my friend.
