a quick question regarding tablature:7/7 new ? pg.2

Unread post by katie » Sun Mar 21, 2004 10:44 pm

hey you guys - I'm new to reading this type of tablature and I'm hoping you all could answer a few questions for me.

for example with grace is gone:

Chorus
First chord is a single upstroke
E:-3-3---------3-----0-0---------0-----2-2---------2--------------------
B:-0-------0---0-------3-----3---3-------3-----3---3-----2-2-----2---2--
G:-0---0-------0-------2-2-------2-------4-4-------4-------2-2-------2--
D:-0-----------0-----0-0---0---0-0-------4---------4-------2---------2--
A:-2-----------2-----------------------2-2---2---2-2-----0-0---0---0-0--
E:-3-3---3---3-3--------------------------------------------------------
3 3 1 3 4 1 2 1 1 1 1 1 1
End Chorus

-------

1st chord would be third fret on high and low e and second fret on a struming the other open strings - 0 -
2nd chord would be third fret on high and low e
3rd chord would be open g and ?
4th chord would be ?

I'm not sure what the numbers are below the e

also when it says 0h2 I'm assuming that's a hammer onto the second fret of that specific string?

I usually read the guitar chords in the boxes and the notes below it. I was looking for a place in here on a how to learn to read this type of tab, but I couldn't find anything. perhaps I'm not looking in the right place.

thank you for your time in replying. just think I will take this lesson with me for the rest of my life. I'll do my best to understand = )

Well Katie... the chords are in this order... G, D(it's a varition), B, and A. The numbers below the chords is jkanter telling you what finger should be on what string. Like for the G chord, you make is with your middle, ring and pinky finger... instead of using your index, middle, and ring finger like most people tend to. Jkanter is telling you how Dave Matthews is playing the song. And yes, 0h2 is a hammer on.

And for reading Tabs, the numbers next to each designated(sp) string, is the fret that you are suppose to be in while holding the strings down. I'm sure someone can clear this part up for you a little better, but I think what I said before that about everyone else is pretty much spot on. Glad I could help ya you ;-)

is there an easier tab for a different song that might be good to explain this to a beginner! I don't like feeling stupid

light lift me up perhaps:

is this considered tab:

I-------------------------------------I
I---3---3---3---3-----3----3----------I
I---0---0---0---0-----0----0----------I
I-------------------------------------I
I-2---3-------------2----3------------I
I---------1---3---------------1---3----I

if someone could walk me through this I would be so appreciative. From the way it reads to me:

- finger on second fret pluck
- finger on third fret and also strum open string
- finger on third string pluck
- finger on third fret and also strum open string

etc...

First of all, don't feel stupid. We were all beginners once. Just start off with something simple. Let's try Prodest Monkey. It's just a couple of strings, and fingers and no strumming.

Code: Select all

E:----------------------
B:----------------------
G:----------------------
D:-------6-----6-----6--
A:----------6-----4-----
E:-4--4-----------------
   1 1 4 3 4 1 4
What you want to do here is make an Ab power chord, which is your pointer finger on the low E string at the 4th fret, your ring finger on the A string at the 6th fret, and your pinky on the D string at the 6th fret. Pluck each note individually, and when you get to that 4 on the A string just lift your ring finger off and use your pointer to fret that string at the 4th fret instead. Those numbers at the bottom are what finger you should be fretting each string with. Your pointer is 1 your pinky is 4. Listen to the song to get the rhythm and you should get it pretty quickly.

As far as other tabs go, whatever number is on the line for a particular string is which fret your playing that string at. If they all line up it's a chord, and are usually strummed, otherwise the notes are plucked individually. Get tabs for songs you know well and try to hear how you sound campared to how the tabs look. You'll get the hang of it! Sorry if I was confusing, but everyone here is very helpful so anyone can help you out. Keep at it, Katie!

Is this what is repeated through out the whole song?

thanks for the encouragement; I sure do appreciate your time.

Yeah, for Proudest Monkey, that's the whole song. Try singing while you play it, though. Not so easy.
The easiest thing to do to learn tabs, at least it was for me, was to learn some basic chords, and make my own tab charts for them, so that when I read tabs I would recognize those chords when I saw them. And the more you do it, even plucking single notes, you start to see patterns and it keeps getting easier.

Some other of Dave's 'easier' songs (to play, anyway) are Halloween, Grey Street, I'll Back You Up, and Big Eyed Fish. Give some of those a try when you get Proudest Monkey down. And of, course, keep at it! :)

you are awesome!

This is a stretch, really nice. I had to look at your directions really hard and then it made all the sense

"Those numbers at the bottom are what finger you should be fretting each string with. Your pointer is 1 your pinky is 4"

This is what was getting me. Your explanation brought it into a new light!

I'm having a hard time barring chords. My action is pretty high on my ovation and it just doesn't sound good; so I reached a plateau of sorts with that. I'm enjoying finger pluckin' quite a bit with my own personal tunes and this is making for some really nice variation. I figure I'll learn some new tunes from artists I admire and perhaps I can get past this little block.

Thanks for the tip on the other songs. I'm gonna print out I'll back you up and take a look at it tonight and try to sing proudest monkey.
pretty convenient that the new warehouse five has a nice extended version of proudest monkey; it's really building up my dexterity.

cheers love ~
