Liog/Dave style stum pickign
Liog/Dave style stum pickign
I know when Dave picks the strings hes still strumming all the strings or soemthing to that effect. Is it going to be that big of a deal if I pick like I normally do?

I don't know that whole song, but the intro for it, I can strum like a mad man and hit just the chord that I want, it's one of few songs that I can actually do that with. Now I just wish I knew the entire song

Its also the way dave plays. Don't worry about copying it exactly. He is so rediculously good at muting strings that he can strum like a mad man and hit individual notes with his signiture percussive quality. If it sound like the recording, it works, whether it looks like dave or not. Take Stay, for example. I know how to strum the main verse part madly like dave does but I can never do it accurate enough. I always hit the low E string open and it sounds like crap, so I have to back off my ratio of strumming to picking.
Bottom line, practice and do what works and sounds good to you.

OMG, for Stay, I love playing that song just because I have it down where I can play just like him. Strumming like a mad man. Everyone does it different, but that is one of a couple songs that I get great satisfaction knowing that I can play it exactly like Dave can
I don't mean to brag or anything though, just my two cents

Well if you can play the intro, (the intro is basically just the verse) you're not too far off from knowing the whole song...you should really think about learning it, you're about 3/4 of the way there already.2StepGranny wrote:I don't know that whole song, but the intro for it, I can strum like a mad man and hit just the chord that I want, it's one of few songs that I can actually do that with. Is Stay in Bb of Eb? I was playing my electric along with central park and could not find the key so my improvs sounded like shit.

A couple of reasons why You should practice the way Dave palyes LIOG.
1st. You are learning a style of playing that makes Dave so F___ ing good
2nd. You will pick up other dave tunes faster than most because he uses this style in alot of his songs.
3rd. At first this muting style is hard to do however when you get it you will find it very forgiving and relaxing.
watch video and Practice. (study his hands hard)

When Playing Stay How are you muting the low E string? (with what finger?) The way I do it is I mute the Fat String or Low E (just to make sure we are talking the same string.) with my middle and ring finger resting on top of the low E and A strings. Whilw my pointer finger hold down the 8 and mutes the strings below it and my pinky finger hold down the 10. This is also how Dave does it.

I will give you credit for Dave "not being a god", but you certainly cannot say "Dave isn't that good". Dave might not be the soloing, crazy riff master that Jimi Hendrix is; But his style is incredibly unique and extremely brilliant. Dave has a much different way of playing and doesn't play yur typical open chords. I'm sure this is all obvious. But as you said "one thing is for sure....he's better than me", wait until he's not better than you before you make a statement like "Dave isn't that good"mfpukala11 wrote:dave isnt THAT good. yeah he's got a unique style, but he's not a god on guitar. just throwin that out there.TOMAMI wrote:Phatnev

i can make that statement "dave isnt that good" because it's true! in the grand scheme of the guitar world, dave is nowhere near the top 100 guitarists...hell, he's admitted it!dmbmikee wrote:I will give you credit for Dave "not being a god", but you certainly cannot say "Dave isn't that good". and you wanna know why he's not that good? because all his songs, even though many of them have creatively written parts to them, can ALL be learned (and perfected) in a year if you work at it enough. i'm sure the top guitarists/song writers of the world, their repertoire could not be learned and perfected in a year.
the man formed a band that i have loved for the past 6 years, he's the reason i started playing guitar. however, it doesnt mean that he's the awesome player that people on this site make him out to be.
