Your Top 5 Influences?

Unread post by GreedylilPig » Wed Mar 17, 2004 10:31 pm

SSIA. If you're in this forum you're probably a musician of some sort and more than likely an aspiring songwriter. What five figures have been the most influential in your music? This is not a thread to list your favorite musicians. List who you find your style closest to - the artists who have left their mark on the way you think regarding musical composition.

* * *

For me:

1. James Taylor
2. Paul Simon
3. Dave Matthews
4. John Gorka
5. Bruce Springsteen
-Brian

Be excellent to one another.

I wouldn't be so brash as to say I reflect an artist's style, but I can say what has motivated me

my amazing guitarist friend Andrew Henderson
every jazz guitarist i have ever listened to
Hayden Crawford (the Crawford in Crawford & Kavanaugh)
my brothers and their bassist Paul Martin

i like to think that my music had varied styles, i dont really think of any particular artist when i listen to my own stuff. in truth no one has ever really said that my stuff reminds them of anyone else. i'd really like if someone would tell me that so i would know what not to do. actually it would be nice if some of these new folks would take a look and tell me

That's what I meant - influence of style. Didn't mean to come off as being "brash."

Josh, what's your website? I'll gladly check out your stuff when I get a good amount of time.

JK!!! well...it could be considered a sad story  ...but I don't like any other artists as much so as to have them influence my playing...rhythm acoustic guitar is what I like best and what sounds best to me...and Dave is the best rhythm acoustic guitarist out there IMO. However when I do "write" a guitar riff or whatever, it sounds nothing like Dave, so I guess I don't have any real influences when it comes to writing.

I think more often than not they are one in the same.

Not in any particular order :
Sting
Pearl Jam
Dave AND Tim
Ben Harper
Clapton
Leo Kottke
Pink Floyd
Jeff Buckley
Cat Stevens
James Taylor

And many others....
